The “Ever More” of Jazz: Jazz icons Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis are joined here by Tete Montoliu, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and Art Taylor.

Recorded live at at Onkel Pö‘s Carnegie Hall, in Hamburg in 1981, this concert represents a typical Jazz Machine live performance, and the selection of tracks feeds on concise themes and motives from all established sources of the hard bop era where the musicians get plenty of room to stretch out and Jones specially proves his mastery again and again.

The best way to describe Aaron Diehl's trio recording, 'The Vagabond', is that it is a quiet masterpiece. While this is thoroughly a jazz recording rooted in precedents set by Diehl's forbearers such as Art Tatum, Mary Lou Williams, Ahmad Jamal, Roland Hanna and John Lewis; it will come as no surprise to fans of Aaron's previous two Mack Avenue recordings that clear references are made to his background and simultaneous career as a Classical music performer.

In a world like ours, shaped by centrifugal forces, even a monumental corpus like Beethoven’s thirty wo piano sonatas can appear in a new light. Chronological examination of its genesis reveals fascinating parallels. – The Sonatas op.2 were published in the last year of the French Revolution. The ensuing wave of political migration reached Vienna and also affected Elector Maximilian Franz, who was not only the brother of Marie Antoinette and Emperor Joseph II but had also been Beethoven’s employer in Bonn. – Beethoven gave compositional form to the triumph and downfall of a tyrant who brought war to Europe and occupied Vienna.

The music world needs new standards. Not just qualitatively. Robin McKelle, the Paris based vocalist from New York, is setting and singing such new standards.

With a whimsical grin and a contagious beat, the Horne Electric Band brings horn driven electro-funk to the stage. On the cusp of their debut record, the HEB has long tantalized audiences with dozens of shows in New York. They've been featured on BRIC TV and at Blue Note NYC among other places, and can be caught out after curfew regularly at The 55 Bar in the West Village. With vigorous trumpet sparkles, luscious saxophone dances and otherworldly electronic adventures over potent grooves, the groups' spirit and energy is nothing short of infectious.

The Félix Zurstrassen Quartet brings together the brilliantly rhythmic Zurstrassen / Pierre (BEL) and the incomparable Nelson Veras (BRA) on the acoustic guitar and the prodigious Ben van Gelder (NLD) on alto saxophone. This high-flying quartet is presenting its new album NOVA, which is at the crossroads of modern and contemporary jazz. While the melodic and harmonic universe of Félix Zurstrassen’s compositions is inspired by musicians such as Brad Mehldau and Pat Metheny, the (poly-) rhythmic universe is influenced by the conceptual music of Steve Coleman and Aka Moon. This sophisticated, contemporary music really focuses on the acoustic sounds of the instruments.

Including premiere recordings, this programme provides us with a privileged opportunity to engage with 36 of Ludwig van Beethoven’s rarely heard sketches, variations and briefest of compositions, even the earliest of which have much to teach us about the emergence of his unique voice and style. The range of Beethoven’s musical experimentation reveals a lasting interest in counterpoint, as well as practical pages such as cadenzas for a Mozart concerto, an incomplete sonata and a second version of the famous bagatelle Für Elise. A significant supplement to his greatest works, these miniatures bring the full arc of Beethoven’s singular genius into ever clearer focus.

During the inter-war period, in the cities of the West, a younger generation found ways to enjoy life in the form of dances such as shimmies, foxtrots, tangos and Charlestons: strong rhythms that became a symbol of a carefree and decadent era. The new jazz craze took hold everywhere, and Kreneks opera Jonny spielt auf became an overnight sensation. The inter-war Zeitgeist in Vienna and the Czech lands is reflected in a programme full of première recordings many of which were hits in their day rich with fashionable dynamism, syncopation and joie de vivre.

The work of pianist Jörg Demus was one of the most important musical exports of Austria after the end of the Second World War. In addition to many other musical partners Demus also entertained a very fruitful collaboration with the established Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger, which is documented on the occasion of his death with 90 years in April 2019 with this collection with mostly unpublished recordings. In addition to Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonatas No. 1 in D major Op. 12 No. 1, No. 5 in F major Op. 24 and No. 6 in A major Op. 30 No. 1 there are two sonatas for violin and piano by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1016/BWV 1017), the Three Romances Op. 94 by Robert Schumann and the famous Sonatina in G major Op. 100 by Antonin Dvorak. The fact that Jörg Demus, in addition to his extensive concert tours and engagements as lecturer, appeared also as a composer in the last decades of his life is only known to proven connoisseurs. One can hear his Sonatas for Violin and Piano Op. 7 "Gahberg Sonata", Op. 35 "Il tramonto" and Op. 48 "Sonata sylvestre / Forest Sonata".

Presenting four masterworks for harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jory Vinikour performs on a harpsichord modeled after German harpsichords of Bachs time, notably Silbermann. Speaking with richness and clarity, this harpsichord was built by Tom and Barbara Wolf.

Tim Berne recorded for Intakt Records for the first time in 2019 as the saxophonist in Michael Formanek’s Very Practical Trio with Mary Halvorson. Now the New York saxophonist, composer and bandleader presents a new CD with his ensemble Snakeoil. After five albums this is the first Snakeoil record to be released on Intakt. The band balances the possibilities of composition, improvisation and the tonal possibilities of an acoustic and electric playing jazz band in an unmistakable way. The Fantastic Mrs.10 is one of Snakeoil's most mature and at the same time most edgy CDs.
