“For Virginia”, the new album by pianist and composer Sébastien Lovato, is inspired by one of the most singular feathers of English literature: Virginia Woolf. To stage and sublimate this dreamlike universe, the composer gathered around him an original and flawless casting.

I felt like my job was to hover over all of it like a moth. Find melody in everything. Leave openings for everyone to work at the top of their creativity. We made our album, Roomsound, in much the same way (almost 20 years ago). Three of us in the studio ' Be humans. Play together as much as possible. A good feel beats perfection every time. Add other musicians to add other voices and other colors, to do the things we can't do.

This 7 CD box set features the first complete cycle of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies recorded by Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, including symphonies previously released on the LPO’s label and new recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3, Francesca da Rimini and Serenade for Strings.

Serge Rachmaninoff himself played his Third Piano Concerto in 1911 in the Netherlands with the Concertgebouworkest and Willem Mengelberg. He noted at the time: "The musicians thought it was beautiful, but the audience and the critics did not." In the end, pianist Vladimir Horowitz was able to inspire the audience for the work, and today 'Rach 3' is considered to be one of the warhorses in the repertoire. With this notoriously difficult concerto the young Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov made his dazzling Concertgebouworkest debut under the direction of Valery Gergiev.

The Head Shop is one of those horribly out of print oddities that it's practically impossible to find information on. My basic impressions are that I can't really tell if this was a legitimate band, or one of those psychedelic exploitation albums. Basically, the playing is very much along the exploitative lines; my wife doesn't know much about psych but she pointed out that this music reminded her of The Zodiac's Cosmic Sounds. Still, there's a touch more of weird inspiration than the bulk of exploitation albums have. For some reason, a lot of this album also makes me think of the music from Jesus Christ Superstar - especially around the middle with tracks like "Listen With A Third Ear" and "Opera In The Year 4000."

Since their release in 1972, these recordings have been highly regarded for their transparent orchestral textures, thus overcoming the frequent criticism that Schumann's orchestration of these symphonies was clumsily dense. The performances are superb. Sawallisch has a mastery of orchestral dynamics which is crucial to successfully performing these works. Much of Schumann's musical vocabulary and emotional expressiveness in these four symphonies is due to the extreme and unexpected transformations in their dynamics, especially in his symphonies nos. 2 and 3.
