Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2013, Sakari Oramo has a special affinity with the music of his compatriot the Finnish composer Sibelius, which this recording admirably demonstrates. Sibelius’s ever-popular Lemminkäinen-Suite is complemented here with the early Spring Song and the lesser-known Suite from Belshazzar’s Feast. Sibelius composed the Lemminkäinen-Suite (also called the Four Legends, or Four Legends from the Kalevala), Op. 22 in the 1890s.

Wah Wah 45s are very proud to announce the release of Kalba, the first album from Ghanaian xylophone master Isaac Birituro and Leeds-based producer and singer-songwriter Sonny Johns AKA The Rail Abandon. The boundary crossing duo were introduced to the world via the first two singles released in early 2019, Yesu Yan Yan and Für Svenja, and the reactions to the project have been overwhelmingly warm. There are many differences between Isaac and Sonny, but a powerful similarity - which gives Kalba its element of relatability - is that desire to hear the usual done unusually and play with the shared influence of the music from afar.

This release features a new recording of the seldom-performed work Quatuor Scientifique by Czech composer Anton Reicha. Reicha was born in 1770 and he is best known for his writings on music theory. His music is a fascinating insight into how his theories worked in practice and this release recognises the composer as a genius ahead of his time.

On May 31st, soul connoisseurs can get their hands on the Soul Explosion album, back on vinyl for the first time since 1969. As part of the label’s “Made in Memphis” reissue campaign, the lacquers for the 2-LP set were cut by Memphis-based engineer Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl and pressed locally at Memphis Record Pressing (MRP). Soul Explosion offers a sampling of the label’s biggest hits and stars of the day, with Eddie Floyd, the Mad Lads, the Staple Singers, Albert King and more. The second disc of the set includes a selection of rare tracks, many of which are exclusive to this collection. These include the Bar-Kays’ “Hot Hips,” Ollie & The Nightingales’ “Heartache Mountain” and Eddie Floyd’s “It’s Wrong To Be Loving You.”

New compilation Untitled collects seven collaborations inspired by the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, pairing emerging and established musicians to create a genre-defying compilation of new music.

Karim Maurice, Will Galison, and string orchestra La Camerata present Odysseus Fantasy, an album supported by the French American Jazz Exchange (FAJE). This fascinating collaboration was inspired by one of the most celebrated of all literary works, Homer’s Odyssey. Musical polymath Karim Maurice’s dreamlike original compositions are based on the epic tale of Ulysses, resulting in a soundworld of freshness and depth. The composer, who also plays piano on the album, is joined by world-renowned harmonica-player Will Galison, who was described by harmonica master Toots Thielemans as "the most original and individual of the new generation of harmonica players". The line-up is completed by versatile string orchestra La Camerata under the direction of violinist-conductor, Gaël Rassaert.
