Throughout the '50s, Smith was a consistent presence in the country charts, racking up no less than 31 Top Ten singles during the course of the decade. In addition to recording, he began appearing in Western movies, like 1957's The Badge of Marshal Brennan. As the '50s ended, Smith was no longer as dominant in the upper reaches of the country charts as he was earlier in the decade, but he never stopped having hits. During the '60s, he consistently charted in the Top 40, which was indicative of his status as a country music statesman.

Not to be confused with the American expatriate and British skiffle star of the same name, Johnny Duncan was a country-pop singer best known for a string of hits with producer Billy Sherrill in the late '70s. Born in the farm town of Dublin, TX, in 1938, Duncan learned guitar from his mother as a child and also had two future performers in his family in the person of cousins Dan and Jimmy Seals (of England Dan & John Ford Coley and Seals & Crofts, respectively). All four family members, plus Duncan's fiddle-playing uncle, Ben Moroney, played together in a local dance band. Duncan took up singing in his late teens and moved to Clovis, NM, in 1959, where he recorded some pop-oriented demos under producer Norman Petty.

We live in a world that seems to increasingly divide into black and white, monotonous, colorless. A young generation finds itself again between hope and doubt, between rebelliousness and fear; a generation that strives for self-expression and self-fulfillment, and must watch as this society is slowly driven to the brink of madness.

A journey across Italian flavours, classical tones, Nordic landscapes, free improvisations, with a distant echo of Argentinean tango. For Italian jazz artist Paolo Russo, Overland encapsulates his love of travel: relaxed, spacious, allowing time to absorb an array of atmospheres. This is reflected musically on this album in Russo's evocations of specific places - a Norwegian fjord, a Brazilian village, the Danish countryside, South American cities, the Adriatic coast - which are communicated in combination with his emotional responses to those journeys. The result is jazz of kaleidoscopic colours, conjuring up the spirit of adventure to create a vivid sense of place and time.

We Fall doesn’t announce itself with much fanfare, and it exits as swiftly as dusk transitioning into night or night into dawn (which gives the whole-album listening experience a sense of fleeting). Don’t be fooled by how unassuming and unobtrusive this music is, though. With We Fall, Josephine Wiggs has built a picturesque bridge between ambient chamber music and pop songwriting. Artists have been peering from one stylistic shore to the other for decades, but Wiggs travels between them with exceptional agility and poise.

Sly Johnson is releasing (finally) his new and third album. This all-round artist, beatboxeur, rapper, instrumentalist or composer, offers us "Silvere" in reference to the first name given by his parents. A return hoped as his second album could boast of a beautiful power tinged with groove and soul.

I just like the sound.”
