SHALOSH. It means ‘three’ in Hebrew. It is the name of a piano trio but also denotes a lot more than that. For the three Israeli musicians, pianist Gadi Stern, bassist David Michaeli and drummer Matan Assayag, SHALOSH is more than just a band, it is a lifetime's project. Or as Stern puts it, "SHALOSH is not just a band, it's an idea."

Stax`s music is not just some intellectual showing-off, it bobbles along in the rhythm-oriented mainstream, and yet, over and above that, it is imbued with an astonishing sense of both freshness and maturity. This quartet is playing the music of now - and at an amazing level of achievement. These musicians formulate shared narratives that go way beyond the mindless clicks and zappings of their generation.

Hildur Guðnadóttir has composed the music for the TV series Chernobyl, a co-production between HBO and Sky. Written by Craig Mazin, the five-part miniseries dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history — the April 26, 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in then - Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic — and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster.

Although now largely forgotten, Rhené-Emmanuel Bâton (1879-1940) was a key figure in Parisian musical circles during the early 1900s. Rhené-Baton, as he was later known, was born in Normandy to a Breton family. but trained at the Paris Conservatoire to become a composer, pianist and conductor. A meeting with Serge Diaghilev led to the engagement to conduct the Ballets russes on tour, and as a conductor he was the subject dedicatee of several works such as Roussel’s Second Symphony.

Maurice Gendron plays Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms and Fauré. Frenchman Maurice Gendron (1920-1990) was known for his poise and elegant, pristine playing. If Daniil Shafran played with unconventional hand positions, Gendron’s are nearest to the ideal. His hands are cello perfect: rounded, relaxed, symmetrical, and produced a shimmering sound.

This third volume in the series from the electrifying combination of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Manchester Camerata under Gabor Takacs-Nagy explores the final two of the six piano concertos of the year 1784, on which Mozart staked his reputation as both a performer and composer. Alongside these works features the pioneering Quintet for Piano and Winds, also from 1784, the first written for this combination of instruments and a work which Mozart regarded as his finest to date.

This album is a double journey through time. On one hand, the three pieces selected span a century in the history of the Viennese piano trio; Hummel’s work, composed in 1799, keeps a foot firmly in the classical era; Brahms’ second piano trio, written in 1882, is a crown jewel of Viennese romanticism, and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht is a perfect example of the atmosphere that reigned in the city at the turn of the century. In addition, the three works mirror the intensities of the day. Hummel’s light and sparkling trio evokes the morning, Brahms’ resplendent and well-worked piece represents the afternoon and evening and Schoenberg’s composition, as the title already indicates, relates to the dark, moonlit night.

The Sixth Jump is the first trio release from French pianist Benoît Delbecq, released in tandem with a companion solo album on which Delbecq deconstructs some of the same songs he interprets here with the trio. This recording features intense yet supple polyrhythmic improvisations built up in interlocking layers and cycles, woven together with the bass and drums and a distinctive melodic/tonal sense that balances consonance and dissonance with timbral shifts in many intriguing ways. The Sixth Jump was named one of the 12 best records of 2010 ("Choc de l’année") by Jazzman, the leading jazz magazine in France.

Though he has been one of the avatars of prepared piano for over a decade, Benoit Delbecq has only now released a solo album. Nu-Turn (Songlines) is well worth the long wait, a strikingly well-defined recording featuring an immaculate Steinway D piano. Throughout the album, Delbecq's affinity for African and Asian folk music (which is most vividly evident in the timbres created by his driftwood preparations, which suggest indigenous percussion and string instruments) and his Paul Bley-derived lyricism and floating pulse constantly dovetail about one another. This accentuates the exotic, mysterious qualities of Delbecq's music that, in the past, have been tempered in other settings. Propelled by a cool attack, the music lingers in the air like incense, pungent but not overwhelming. Nu-Turn is an excellent way to become familiar with one of the most distinctive pianists on the international scene.
