Named after the street that led to Soulsville, USA, Memphis-bred rock and blues outfit Southern Avenue burst onto the scene with their acclaimed debut in 2017. The boundary-breaking combo sparked a one-band musical revolution, embodying an effortlessly organic blues/soul/R&B fusion that reflects the band's international roots. On their album Keep On, the band does exactly that, never letting up with a churning blend of horns, gospel-tinged harmonies and rhythm section.

Jamila Woods has a voice and lyrical sensibility that transcends generations, and so it makes sense to have this lush and layered album that bounces seamlessly from one sonic aesthetic to another. This album follows the 2011 critically acclaimed studio album “Forevermore” and 2015’s “The Purple Album”, a reimagining of Deep Purple classics from Whitesnake mastermind’s David Coverdale’s time in that band. The 13 original, visceral tracks on “Flesh & Blood”, the band’s 13th studio album, are, luckily for you dear reader, “all killer, no filler”, as the saying goes.

For improvising musicians, the duo is the most intimate of set-ups. Two musicians, alone together, reaching out and responding to the other in the moment, create a glorious frisson. In jazz there is a minor but noble subgenre of piano-sax duos (think Paul Desmond/Dave Brubeck, Wayne Shorter/Herbie Hancock, Dave Liebman/Richie Bierach), and particularly of European pianists duetting with American saxophonists: witness alto sax player Lee Konitz’s absorbing exchanges with French pianists Martial Solal and Michel Petrucciani.

Rock & roll lifers that they are, Wilco knows the implications of a self-titled album, how any record bearing an eponymous name is bound to be seen as a reintroduction. That's why they puncture Wilco (The Album) with a parenthetical aside, a slyly ironic joke that deflates the notion that Wilco is returning to its roots while signaling that the band is finally lightening up again, a notion reinforced by the camel birthday party on the cover. And, to be fair, "reintroduction" is indeed too strong a term for a band that never went away, they merely spent a decade-and-a-half on a walkabout, consuming anything that came their way, changing their tone and tenor from record to record.

Philadelphia-based indie rock powerhouse Dr. Dog turn in their first live collection with the curiously named double album Live at a Flamingo Hotel. On even their most orchestrated work, they've always been a band with a distinct kind of energy and a looseness that seems like it should translate well to the stage. Having tracked much of 2013's B-Room live in their recently constructed home studio, a legitimate live album follow-up is a logical progression. After letting the tape roll during a 20-concert stretch in 2014, they combed through the results and picked the premier performances from a set list representing seven studio albums and over a decade's worth of material.

Smoove and Turrell are back with a stunning fifth studio album, 'Mount Pleasant'. Conceived as the middle album of a trilogy starting with their previous "Crown Posada", the new record showcases the evocative lyrics and voice of John Turrell alongside the glossy production skills of his partner in crime Smoove and is described by John as "an optimistic look at a pessimistic time". Throughout their career the band have always flirted with crossover appeal while still retaining their fervent live fanbase. 'Crown Posada' continued the trend with national radio playlists in the UK and Europe. Craig Charles remained an enthusiastic supporter while Trevor Nelson featured the band on his Radio 2 show and described them as "carrying the torch for modern British soul music".

On Regina Carter's Southern Comfort, her Sony Masterworks debut, the Detroit-born violinist continues the musical journey of self-discovery that began with 2006's I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey, a collection of her mother's favorite jazz standards. She followed it with 2010's Reverse Thread, a brilliant collection of traditional and modern African songs. Southern Comfort traces her father's side of history through the music of America's Deep South. Assisted in performing and arranging by her own band and some helpful studio aces, Carter delivers a program that weds the America's Southern heritage in folks songs gospel, spirituals, child ballads, blues through to its cultural evolution in the mid-20th century's country music, jazz, and R&B. She and her collaborators spent months researching material from the Smithsonian collections to more mercurial and familial sources.

From the brooding opening title track to the closing Chet Baker homage, "I Fall in Love Too Easily," Dark Nights unapologetically embraces the heart of jazz. Every aspect of the album from the cover photo, to Cohen's precise trumpet inflections, to the trio's dedication to immediacy and collective improvisation (and even the album's forays into electronic affects) is saturated with the emblematic textures, rhythms, and imagery of jazz. This is achieved with professionalism, creativity, and skill, without a wit of irony or cliché, while avoiding both navel-gazing insularity and crowd-pleasing revivalism.

Neptune is the major label debut album from Boston progressive folk duo, Tall Heights. Neptune is the follow up to 2015 s Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and The Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver.
