One of the series of highly successful live albums MPS produced at Munich’s famous Domicile jazz club, Soul Eyes unites four of Europe’s best known expatriate American jazz musicians. Quincey Jones marveled that trumpeter Benny Bailey “has so personal a sound and so completely avoids clichés. Benny is thrillingly himself.” Since his move to Europe in the 50’s, Bailey worked with a variety of top big bands as well as such legendary players as Dexter Gordon and Eddie Harris. Before saxophonist Nathan Davis made Paris his home he had worked with the likes of Ray Charles and Art Blakey. His Paris Reunion Band featured such greats as Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson and Nat Adderley.

This HighRes reissue of this 1970 RCA album from the Folk and Country singer-songwriter, which was John Denver's third album and consisted mainly of cover songs. Whose Garden Was This starts out with the Tom Paxton-penned environmentalist anthem and includes Denver's versions of such songs as the Band's 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down', Jerry Jeff Walker's 'Mr. Bojangles' and The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Golden Slumbers' as well as Denver's own contributions including 'I Wish I Could Have Been There (Woodstock)'.

Leonard Bernstein's association with the Israel Philharmonic began early in his career as a conductor and composer, and in 1977 the orchestra organized a Bernstein Festival to mark the 30th anniversary of their first concert together. The festival lasted two weeks and consisted solely of works composed by Bernstein. Later that same year, in August of 1977, they appeared together at the Berlin Festival, which is when (and where) these live performances were recorded.

British composer Oliver Davis’s works have been described as being ‘beautiful’ (The Times) and having ‘pulsating rhythmic energy’ (Classic FM), and has been heard the world over through his frequent collaborations with ballet companies, from Edwaard Liang’s 13th Heaven which premiered in Singapore to Secrets, choreographed by Erico Montes and premiered by The Royal Ballet. In this new recording Liberty, Davis explores works for violin, soprano, strings and orchestra, working with a host of world-leading performers including violinist Kerenza Peacock, soprano Grace Davidson and cellist Katherine Jenkinson, all alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Paul Bateman. Previous albums from Davis have been critically praised, entering in the top 10 in the UK specialist classical charts and becoming disc of the week on Classic FM and the Mail on Sunday and featuring in several ‘Best albums of the year’ listings.

Mayke Rademakers: "The e-cello is a relatively new instrument; it has not yet conquered its true place in the world of classical music. It presents an enormous spectrum of sound colors as well as the possibility of polyphony when played in conjunction with a loop and other effect pedals. It has inspired me significantly as a classical musician and I cannot now imagine undertaking my compositions and improvisations without it. Improvisation directly engages intuition and spontaneity which in turn enlarges perspective.

Michael Collins and Michael McHale here present a new volume in their exploration of the lyrical clarinet repertoire. Their journey through works that encapsulate the variety of nuance and colour of which the instrument is capable, inevitably led them to another great composer for the medium: Max Reger. The Brahms-influenced (see CHAN 10844), essentially lyrical and tender works recorded here contrast particularly with the more familiar, contrapuntally rich – and loud – organ music usually associated with Reger.

Usually, the titles of compositions give us insight into how their creators were inspired by literature, landscapes or works of art. But mere titles do not exhaust the phenomenon of crossing borders the least. Many artists have multiple talents. Franz Liszt not only composed, but was also an outstanding piano virtuoso. Robert Schumann had to give up his promising piano career.

What Simon Höfele does with his trumpet is simply sensational! The prizewinner of the German Music Competition and winner of the special prize "U 21" of the ARD music competition shows all his skills on his GENUIN debut CD in the Primavera Edition. It presents an electrifying program of contemporary music: from György Ligeti to HK Gruber, from André Jolivet to Toshio Hosokawa. What results is a firework of sounds, between delicate hints and shattering fanfares, between deep seriousness and teasing humor. Remastered rare live show recorded by the BBC at the Paris Theatre, 1974. The performance captures the group at the height of their Swan Song era as frontman Phil May leads the band through cuts from 1974's Silk Torpedo album including Dream / Joey and Come Home Momma along with fan favourites such as Old Man Going from the seminal rock concept album S.F.Sorrow (1968).
