Keys to the Kingdom is easily the most personal album recorded by the North Mississippi Allstars to date. Luther and Cody Dickinson lost their father, the legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson, in late 2009. Along with fellow bandmember Chris Chew, the trio gathered together in the Dickinson family's home Zebra Studios to record a tribute. The words "Produced for Jim Dickinson" adorn the back of the album Keys to the Kingdom CD music.

Among all the many Chandos brass recordings, each release having played a major role in the labels successful history, this one may well be the loudest.

Unlike the only published piano duet arrangement by Max Reger, which has serious performance limitations, Eleonor Bindman’s new transcription of the Brandenburg Concertos highlights their polyphony, imagining how Bach might have distributed the score if he had created four-part inventions for piano duet. With an equal partnership between the two instrumentalists, using the modern piano’s full potential to convey the unique scoring and character of each work, the concertos are ordered to create an engaging listening sequence.

José Bragato and Jürg Eichenberger became close friends when Eichenbergers chamber music ensemble Chamber Soloists Lucerne went on a tour of South America in the summer of 2004. Bragato’s tango Graciela y Buenos Aires is a musical testimony to this love story. As a gesture of gratitude for the invitation, José Bragato then gave him some of his own compositions and exclusive arrangements, including some for cello and piano. ‘Danza de la Vida’ is the first recorded compilation of some of these pieces.

The latest striking release from soprano Roberta Invernizzi acts as a lightning conductor for this new vocal extravaganza from Glossa devoted to the Italian Baroque composer Francesco Gasparini. Invernizzi finds herself very much home both in the music – which was originally first-performed around the turn of the eighteenth century and which provided “influences” for Handel, who was Gasparini’s junior by some 20 years – but also, so noticeably, with the words: librettos from the likes of Zeno, Piovene or Salvi find this singer exercising her customary intelligence.

Widows is a heist film written and directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave, Shame) based on the 1983 TV series of the same name. Starring a magnificent ensemble cast including Viola Davis (Fences), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Colin Farrel (In Bruges) and Daniel Kaluuya Get Out), Widows is the story of a failed heist attempt that leaves four armed robbers dead. In their grief, the robber’s widowed wives take it upon themselves to step up and finish the job. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th, 2018 to glowing reviews and is emerging as a favorite going into the 2018 awards season.

Brahms composed the first of his three Piano Trios aged 21, then pruned and recomposed it in his late 50s. The Oliver Schnyder Trio’s new Brahms set is different from most in that they include both versions. Indeed, they are ardent advocates for the earlier one, which bursts with youthful vigour but sprawls under the weight of its own ideas, and is by some way the longest work on the recording. The only sleeve note is a letter from Oliver Schnyder addressed to Brahms in which he castigates the composer for what he sees as a lack of self-belief.

Paul Hindemith belongs to the most original and interesting composers of the 20th century. Once described by the Boston Globe as a "20th-century Brahms", Hindemith wrote music that is Modernist in its rhythmic audacity and colourful orchestration, but simultaneously inspired by Classical forms and styles.

This might well be the best Funk Unit that Nils Landgren has had gathered around him since 2010: technically outstanding, this is a group of team players who combine well with a great groove connection. James Brown meets Parliament meets Crusaders meets Funk Unit: that's one way you could describe the musical concept on 'Teamwork'. It is pure party feeling, the notes whirl coolly through the ranks, superb horn sets alternate with ecstatic solos, dance beats, smooth vocals and strong melodies, but there is also time for elegance and heartfelt blues. 'Teamwork' is all that and then some, played by a dream team of sweat-inducing funk workers with soul in their blood.

Calendar Girls (previously titled The Girls) is a musical with music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and a book by Tim Firth. The show is based on the 2003 film Calendar Girls, which is in turn based on a true story. The musical received its world premiere at the Grand Theatre, Leeds in 2015, before transferring to The Lowry, Salford in January 2016. It went on to open in London's West End at the Phoenix Theatre in February 2017, with a UK Tour tour starting in October 2018.

Scotland's Lorne Balfe is a Grammy Award-winning composer and producer known for his various film, television, and video game scores. Born in Inverness, Scotland in 1976, Balfe grew up in a musical family and began playing piano at a young age. A gifted musician, by his teens he was making a living writing jingles for commercials, a skill he quickly transitioned into scoring music for TV shows. After a period living in London, he relocated to California, where he joined the staff at composer Hans Zimmer's Santa Monica-based Remote Control Productions. Working with Zimmer, he earned credits for such notable productions as Batman Begins, The Da Vinci Code, Transformers, and more.

It would seem that cubic forces are compelling Pierrick Pédron to meet the highest challenges. Like keeping alive a trio at the heart of which, in 2012, he accomplished what you might readily call a performance. In the space — only two or three days — of a few crazy hours, those musician-friends undertook the ascent of a magic mountain: the repertoire of Thelonious Monk. And so Kubic’s Monk saw the day, a shockwave of a record whose concision and urgency became allies of a modern music — slipped into a jewel of a setting — whose raw manufacture amplified its uncompromising strength. A single, perfect stroke!
