Repressing. Digitally remastered reissue of the debut album from the Southern rockers, originally released in 1977. Led by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant (brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie), 38 Special's blend of roots and Rock made them favorites in the Southern Rock movement that also included The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Nine tracks including 'Long Time Gone', 'Play A Simple Song' and 'Gypsy Belle'.

Mixing up punk speed, metal guitar power, and a dash of electronics for seasoning, Southern California rockers Strung Out were formed in 1989, with a lineup featuring vocalist Jason Cruz, guitarists Jake Kiley and Rob Ramos, bassist Jim Cherry, and drummer Adam Austin. By the time the band released their first 7", Austin had been replaced by Jordan Burns, formerly of Ten Foot Pole. The quintet signed with NOFX bassist Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords label in 1993 and issued a debut album, Another Day in Paradise, the following year.

The cellist Jan Vogler, who lives in New York and Dresden, has recorded three Double concertos for violin, cello and orchestra with his wife, the outstanding violinist Mira Wang, with the renowned Royal Scottish National Orchestra under direction of Peter Oundjian. Brahms' famous Double concerto captivates with wonderfully sweeping melodies, romantic sounds, eloquent solos and great orchestral sound.

Who said waltz was frivolous? For this recording dedicated to the genre, Vassilis Varvaresos has concocted a program that shatters prejudices. Far from 18th century ballroom dancing, the selected works are filled with sensuality, irony and strength. It is the fatal side of this musical whirlwind which is highlighted: Liszt and his diabolical waltz; Schumann and his chiaroscuro emotion; the sad elegance of Tchaikovsky; Scriabin and his lush sensuality; Rosenthal's ecstatic freedom on Johann Strauss's themes; and, on the ruins of the past, the poisonous darkness of Ravel's Valse.

It is not so much a question of Nigel Kennedy meeting Gershwin with some “Maestro Gershwin, I presume” than of Gershwin hitting upon Kennedy in the New York jungle with a “Mister Kennedy, I presume, playing some Gershwin”. The present album is as much by the now classic explorer of jazz-cum-classical music as by Kennedy and, at that, by his jam session colleagues, to wit guitarists Howard Alden and Rolf ‘die Kobra’ Bussalb, bassist Tomasz ‘Insomnia’ Kupiec, as well as flutist David Heath.

Recorded live on May 1 at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, the recording represents McDonald’s first collaboration with Decca Gold – as well as her first solo recording with full orchestra.

The Orchester Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck continue the Resound Beethoven series, performed on period instruments and scrupulously respecting the orchestral layout of 200 years ago. Volume 6 is devoted to the Eighth Symphony, premiered in 1814, and the Piano Concerto in D major op.61a, first performed in 1808. Beethoven made this piano arrangement of his Violin Concerto at the request of Clementi, who wished to publish it in London. The recording took place in the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Old University) in Vienna, where many important works by Beethoven received their first performance. The Austrian pianist Gottlieb Wallisch is the soloist in this rarely performed concerto.

In her second Warner Classics album, entitled In Between, German-Italian pianist Sophie Pacini explores a fascinating series of personal and musical relationships: between Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn; between Schumann and his wife Clara, and between Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny. Music by all four of them is complemented by Liszt's transcription of Schumann's glorious love song to Clara, 'Widmung'.

Certainly, there are the Four Seasons and all the violin concertos which are more famous and virtuosic than other works. But it is here, in his concertos for solo strings, that Antonio Vivaldi showcases his writing talent at its highest and purest level: concise, vivacious, deep and immediately emotional. A Vivaldi in the firmament, served here with passion and excellence by Accademia Bizantina.

Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent present a highly accomplished version of one of the masterpieces of seventeenth-century sacred music. Composed shortly after L’Orfeo and dedicated to Pope Paul V, Monteverdi’s Vespers constantly surprise us with their audacity and their great emotional power. Stile antico and stile moderno combine here to wonderful effect, with Renaissance-style polyphony, accompanied monody and concertato style coexisting harmoniously.

For those who remember Simian Mobile Disco from their best-known albums, 2007 debut ‘Attack Decay Sustain Release’ and its followup, ‘Temporary Pleasure’, ‘Murmurations’ might come as something of a surprise. But fans who’ve kept up with their experimental production in the intervening years know that this is a duo who eschew anything close to a signature sound in favour of exploring techniques outside of their, and their listeners’, comfort zones. Named after undulating formations of starlings, sixth album ‘Murmurations’ is about movement and space as much as their earlier albums were about minimalism and melody; from start to finish, it has the feel of sounds bouncing off the walls of a vast chamber.
