One of the most original features of the Sonatas for violin and piano BWV 1014-1019 is the imagination shown by Johann Sebastian Bach in harmonic, melodic and contrapuntal terms. The pianist’s right hand and the violin must constantly answer each other, while the basso continuo is entrusted to the pianist’s left hand. The exceptional degree of invention to be found in this musical dialogue – a felicitous harmony between melody and counterpoint – irremediably excludes any form of excessive soliloquising.

Then under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy, Wrocław in Poland was a major center in the 17th century, with musicians coming from all over Europe to create a melting pot of influences and cultures. Many manuscripts thought lost during the Second World War have been rediscovered and are performed once again. Very few of the composers’ names will be familiar, but there are wonders aplenty on this beautifully programmed recording that distinguishes itself by its variety and myriad colors. Stephan MacLeod draws the best out of his choir and instrumentalists, the brass of Concerto Palatino making a particular impact.

Un son. Brut. Un leadership. Naturel.

Spencer, who also orchestrated The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The score was recorded by engineer Eric Tomlinson and edited by Kenneth Wannberg, and the scoring sessions were produced by Star Wars director George Lucas and supervised by Lionel Newman, head of 20th Century Fox's music department.

This release was certified Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in the UK, containing 17 tracks from selections of the score, meant to stand alone as a separate listening experience and not as one hears the score in the film. John Williams edited each track to present the score as one would hear it in a concert suite.
