Pianist John Taylor’s death in 2015 robbed British jazz of one of its most distinctive exponents, an improviser and compose who confidently blended folk and classical forms with a distinctive off-centre approach to swing. The 17th century composer Johann Georg Künstel is one of the forgotten persons in history. He lived at Franconia in South East Germany where he is mentioned as a schoolmaster and court organist. But his inclusion in Johann Gottfried Walthers Musicalisches Lexicon of 1732 provides clues about his significance. The St Mark Passion can be considered to be his most significant work; records show that it was frequently performed in Coburg even after the composers death.

Won’t nearly an hour and three quarters of music for violin and piano by the same composer be too monotonous? No it won’t because it is Dvořák… Dvořák never repeated himself; in every work, he created a different musical world. It would be hard to find another composer capable of such diversity within a single musical genre. After the earliest of the pieces, the Romance, he sent his publisher Simrock the Mazurek, which he dedicated to the Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. The almost meditative Nocturne first appeared in a string quartet and then a quintet before being heard for the first time as an independent piece in arrangements including one for violin and piano.

This unique programme of four works for cello and piano by significant twentieth-century composers is a reflection of the greater interest in writing for the cello that the inspiration of two highly gifted instrumentalists was to have during that period. For many music-lovers, the major cello virtuosos of the century were Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich, each of whom dominated the instrument in their respective halves of the century.
