L'utlimo volume della trilogia dedicata al ‘900 storico italiano, co-prodotta dalla Fondazione Orchestra Regionale Toscana. Il primo titolo era stato pubblicato nel 2016, sempre diretto dalla bacchetta principale dell’ORT Daniele Rustioni, ed era dedicato alle musiche di Giorgio Federico Ghedini. Il secondo invece proponeva alcune composizioni di Goffredo Petrassi.

The peculiarity of this release by the Austrian ensemble Pandolfis Consort playing on period instruments is that Mozart’s “Requiem” is presented here in the version for string quartet made by his contemporary Peter Lichtenthal, therefore going not only without choir and orchestra, but also without vocal soloists. Everything is focused on the four voices of the strings, which creates a special intimacy and intensity. As the founder of the Pandolfis Consort, the violist Elzbieta Sajka-Bachler, suggests, this ingenious version, made by the composer at the time to popularize Mozart's music in Italy, has the character of chamber music and music making because “the small space brings the listeners closer together than a concert hall”. Tears, sorrow, pain, but also hope can be experienced here especially close.

“You know it’s gonna get stranger…” It’s hard to imagine things getting a whole lot stranger than they are these days in Washington, DC, where we are told (as George Orwell himself might have warned we would be) to accept the existence of such things as “alternative facts.” Clearly, our Nation’s Capital has been in need of a happier sort of alternative reality, and Dead & Company were just the guys for the job for at least this one November night, delivering one of the strongest shows of the 2017 Fall tour.

Over the past few years Dave Gisler has earned himself an impressive reputation in the free-thinking force field of contemporary jazz as a maverick sound architect on the electric guitar. With Lionel Friedli, the impulsive style-busting force of nature on the drums, and the agile bassist Raffaele Bossard, with his earthy tone, Gisler brought two of the most sought after musicians on the Swiss jazz scene. Since 2016 these three fans of choice yet rough-edged musicianship have been navigating their ship through open musical seas with punky energy, the driving power of indie rock, the free aesthetic of the 1960s and the cadences of modern jazz.

The trio’s captivating aesthetic is thanks to a symbiotic intensity of expressio. It contains traces of ’70s free jazz psychedelics and particles of contemporary club culture and aspires to a broad fusion of free jazz and electronic music, energetically driven by a collective improvisation which outflanks solo gymnastics. After their celebrated 2016 recording, The Willisau Concert, with YES the trio have added fire to a highly original, unconventional musical art, swaggering again through electronic landscapes.

With their second album the Fred Frith Trio with Jason Hoopes (Bass) and Jordan Glenn (Drums) continues to explore the dimension of the guitar trio. "Closer to the Ground" is all about sound, mood, texture, ideas, and atmosphere. Playful, intimate, and bound together, the Fred Frith Trio reminds us of what listening is all about.

One marker of bassist Michael Formanek's creativity and versatility is the range of distinguished musicians of several generations he's worked with. While still a teenager in the 1970s he toured with drummer Tony Williams and saxophonist Joe Henderson. Starting in the '80s he played long stints with Stan Getz, Fred Hersch and Freddie Hubbard.

Christoph Irniger, a prodigious stylist with a warm sound, presents the third album with his band Pilgrim on Intakt Records. With "Crosswinds" the saxophonist who relishes adventure and surprise delivers a cultivated studio album. Multi-layered, subtle and melodically entangled, the eight pieces radiate a wondrous, atmospheric tranquility.

There's something about Texas. Open up the history books and you'll find the Lone Star State at the eye of every rock 'n' roll storm. Pull up a stool in any bar-room and you'll still hear Southern gentlemen spin stories of ZZ Top, Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Now, tip a ten-gallon hat to the bandleader writing her own name onto the state's famed back pages, as Ally Venable releases breakout third album, Texas Honey - with production from another local hero. "Ally is the future of the blues and the crossover music of American roots-rock," nods Mike Zito. "She is Texas Honey."

Alexander Hawkins is a creative epicentre from the London jazz scene and is regarded in the UK as one of the most innovative musicians of the younger generation with a surprising radius of action. He plays with Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Taylor Ho Bynum, Louis Moholo, Shabaka Hutchings and Elaine Mitchener. 'Iron into Wind' is the name of his new piano solo.

Between 2006and 2016, Fred Frith played 80 concerts at New York's unique space for experimental music.

Human Feel have been together 30 years now, with no personnel changes in almost as long. Chris Speed, Andrew D'Angelo, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jim Black had been developing individual and collective vocabularies in this very outfit, which went on to epitomize the 90s downtown scene. Through it all Human Feel has carried on, and whenever they reconvene they have new musical stories to tell, and old ways of relating, of honing musical structures that depend on precision in the details yet leave much to be determined in performance. Now Human Feel present 'Gold' 12 years after their last album.

In his trio, Tom Rainey – one of the busiest drummers on the New York scene – has united with two of his closest musical allies. Ingrid Laubrock, the saxophonist extraordinaire who left England for the USA some years ago, causing quite a stir with her own band projects as well as in groups from Anthony Braxton to Mike Reed. Plus Mary Halvorson who in recent years has earned herself a superb reputation as one of the most interesting guitarists in contemporary Jazz and has worked in projects with musicians ranging from John Zorn to Yo La Tengo, as well as with her own groups. Both Laubrock and Halvorson who are also active composers took first places in the DownBeat 2018 Int'l Critics Poll. With these outright individualists Rainey founded his trio in 2009 which now celebrates its tenth anniversary.
