"During Bach’s lifetime there were four different performances, each time with new modifications, some in response to the circumstances at the time, others influenced by which musicians and instruments he then had at his disposal. However Bach experimented to the greatest degree with the second version, dating from 1725: for instance, he used a different opening chorus (which was later to become the closing chorus of the first part of the St Matthew Passion, a work yet to be composed at this stage) and a couple of other arias near the end of the work.

It's a typically smooth affair, with Haynes delivering effortlessly soulful vocals atop tracks that variously touch on classic soulful house ("Take It To The Top", "Strong Love"), jazz-funk ("Do I Qualify"), boogie ("Round & Round"), revivalist '60s soul ("My Sweetest Temptation"), seductive slow jams ("Giving My All To You") and acid jazz (the Incognito-ish Latin shuffle of "Help Me feel The Sun").

Mat Kerekes is best-known for fronting the Toledo alternative-rock band, Citizen. But his newest solo release highlights some of Kerekes’ best tracks he’s ever written. For the alt-rock musician, an indie/folk album in 2019 might seem a tad far-fetched, but it totally works. Ruby is the brainchild of Mat Kerekes’ biggest influences, some of which being Queen. “Spider Silk” really glorifies the height of his Queen influence, it might as well have been written by Freddie Mercury himself. And with the line, “I still dream of you / but you just don’t care,” it throws itself back afar. A lot of these tracks are emotional piano ballads, with “Autumn Dress” and “One For the Wildflowers” being among the best. “It has been a long-haul, with no one there to cheer you on” opens “Hawthorne,” arguably the album’s best track. It’s on this cut where the album really climaxes between an emotional Kerekes, and the record’s finest vocal melodies.
