I jumped at the chance to collaborate with the flexible virtuosos of the PRISM Quartet. The Book of Days consists of seven movements, one for each day of the week. Each movement has its own musical character. Some of the music is loud and dissonant; some is quiet and still. Some movements are jazzy and frantic; others are more contemplative. An exceptional live recording, “Concert In Athens”, the tenth ECM release by Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou, incorporates moving performances by guests Kim Kashkashian and Jan Garbarek. The US violist and the Norwegian saxophonist have each made important contributions to Karaindrou’s music in the past, Garbarek with his playing on the film-score for The Beekeeper (“Music for Films”) and Kashkashian as the key musical protagonist of “Ulysses’ Gaze”. Themes of both those films are revisited here, amongst much that is new.

Internationally acclaimed and Grammy winning conductor Paavo Järvi directs one of the worlds finest orchestra’s, the Orchestre de Paris, in this outstanding collection of all seven of Sibelius’ symphonies. As the music director of Orchestre de Paris (2019-2016), he has performed several works by Sibelius including the seven symphonies. In 2015, he was presented with the Sibelius medal by the Finnish Ambassador to France, Risto Piipponen, for his remarkable work in promoting the music of Sibelius throughout France. Sibelius: Complete Symphonies will be the first ever recording of Sibelius’ complete symphonies by a French orchestra.

Possibly the first example of symphonic poem, “Les préludes” (1854) originated from an earlier setting of four poems by Joseph Autran from mixed chorus and piano, completed in 1845. Three years later, Liszt’s new interest in orchestration compelled him to elaborate the four movements into an orchestral overture, which he titled “Les Quatre Eléments” – The Four Elements. During his revision of the work three years later, he came across a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine, “Les preludes,” from the collection “Nouvelles méditations poétiques.” Liszt was taken by it, and chose it as the new title for the orchestral work, which was premiered in 1854 under his own direction. Several versions for piano appeared over the following years, including those of Karl Klauser and Eugene d’Albert. Liszt’s own splendid transcription for two pianos was published in 1856.

In early 18th-century England, the recorder was a popular instrument among music lovers, therefore – since the eminent Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli’s works made an enormous impression in the country – it was only a matter of time before numerous virtuoso recorder arrangements of his string works began to appear.
