ew music-lovers will be familiar with the name of Giovanni Battista Costanzi. Some may know him as a cello concerto in D is attributed to Haydn (H VIIb,4), but also to Costanzi. That piece dates from 1772, close to the end of his life and career. The present disc includes a piece which he composed in 1723, when he hadn't even turned 20. At that time he had already entered the service of Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome. In 1729 his opera Carlo Magno was performed, which was a huge success. As a result he held some of the most prestigious positions in Roman music life in the next decades. It seems that Luigi Boccherini was one of his pupils. The French composer Grétry considered him one of Rome's most popular composers. He was a prolific composer but the largest part of his oeuvre has been lost. What remains is a handful of oratorios, a number of liturgical works, including masses, the above-mentioned opera and arias from some other works for the stage, a cantata and some instrumental works.

It's never easy to be the sibling of a star when you're active in the same profession - ask Joey Travolta or Frank Stallone, and try to find out what happened to John Murray, one of Bill's brothers. Similarly, David Knopfler, younger brother of Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler, has often remained in his brother's shadow, unfairly remaining a footnote in the famous British band's history and not always gaining much recognition for his solo work - provided people know he's remained active in music at all. The comparison to the abovementioned actors is misleading, however, since they all possess little of their siblings' talent, whereas David Knopfler has proven himself to be a talented musician with considerable songwriting skills of his own and several strong solo releases under his belt…

The addition of two cover songs - rocking renditions of Uriah Heep's "Stealin'" and (obscure American hard rock band) Dust's "From a Dry Camel" -, several other rare cuts, rough mixes, remixes and live tracks makes the Deluxe 2CD of Nightingale's "I" absolutely superlative for longtime fans and new devotees.

Ronald Smith is best remembered as the pianist who reintroduced the complex, but fantastic compositions of Charles-Valentin Alkan to the world in the 1960s, some 90-120 years after they were first written and 40 years after Alkan's previous great champion, Ferruccio Busoni, had died. Smith received his first piano lessons from his mother and when he entered school, others recognized his talent as well.

Anton Rubinstein was born in a village on the border between the Ukraine and Moldavia, but his family moved to Moscow as early as 1831, where his brother Nikolai was born. The two brothers received their first music lessons from their mother, but in 1837, Anton began to study with the best music teacher in Moscow. By the age of five, Nikolai had produced his first composition. B

I originally purchased this album in the 80's and was amazed at the PJBE's total understanding of every style of music. When you get this album you will be amazed at Frank Lloyd's ability on horn and the support from the other players as well as the "fun" they have with him and the music. Originally composed for cornet and piano (Band) the ability to perform this on horn is stunning. The Koetsier Circus March is an absolute joy and one of the best, most interesting compositions ever written for Brass Quintet.
