The late John Martyn was a legend in British music circles, a phenomenal guitarist and arranger whose influence has been acknowledged by everyone from Bob Marley and Eric Clapton to Brian Eno and the Edge, and whose approach to soundcraft helped lay the foundation for an entire generation of trip-hop artists and DJs. Heaven and Earth is sort of of a tribute album; it consists of unfinished tracks that Martyn was working on at the time of his death in 2009, some of them bluesy, some reggae-inflected or jazzy, but all of them imbued with a powerful sense of space and an expansive approach to melody. "Heel of the Hunt" is among the most spacious and powerful tracks on this album, while "Stand Amazed" hints strongly at reggae while guitars, clavinets, and soulful backing vocalists respond with more of an R&B vibe.

Back To The World is a powerful concept album dealing with America's social issues, the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the environment (years before it became fashionable), as well as Curtis' optimism for the future. It peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as number 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart.

Here's a Symphony of Psalms that successfully captures the spirit and letter of the work–reverence, jubilation, and celebration, as well as specifics of orchestral color and texture. Boys' voices–supposedly Stravinsky's original choice–contribute their share to the bright choral timbre, an effect that works very well. We also get first-rate performances of the Mass and the rarely recorded Canticum sacrum.

Star conductor Herbert von Karajan is best known today for his studio recordings. However, although as a media pioneer he recognised the technical possibilities for creating recordings, he always considered the live concert to be the ideal. The radio recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker, which were made in Berlin between 1953 and 1969 and which we present to you in this edition – mostly as first releases – represent an exciting paradox in this respect: they are snapshots that capture the spontaneity of the live performance, the magic of the unique musical moment. Never before has it been possible to experience Karajan the live artist and his joint work with the Berliner Philharmoniker as vividly as in this comprehensive edition.

Modern Electric Blues, Blues Rock, Jazz Rock, Jazz-Blues

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to Tiger Walk is the pair of instrumental albums recorded by Jeff Beck in the mid-'70s, Blow by Blow and Wired. Like those two recordings, this outing showcases a fiery, inventive electric guitarist in a rock and jazz-rock setting. Robben Ford, known in recent years for his blues work with his band, the Blue Line, eschews vocals here, teaming up with keyboard funk master Bernie Worrell for some chunky, funky, wah-wah-laden grooves. This music, led by Ford's blazing guitar lines, is more appropriately categorized as instrumental rock than jazz, but the rhythms recall James Brown and Worrell's alma mater, the P-Funk gang, as often as they do those of a hard rock band. Tenor saxophonist Bob Malach turns in a couple of solid solos, and the rhythm section of drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Charlie Drayton cooks throughout.

This album is dedicated to the greatest master of Russian sacred music, Alexander Arkhangelsky (1846–1924). The son of a priest, he became famous as an outstanding choirmaster, educator, composer, and founder of one of the best choral groups of that time. His legacy includes the All-Night Vigil, two Liturgies, and several dozen spiritual hymns. Arkhangelsky’s music perfectly conveys the spirit of Russian Orthodox worship, distinguished by its amazing melody and heartfelt warmth.

When Ralph Towner burst onto the contemporary jazz scene in the mid-70s, listeners were well aware of his awesome talent as a member of Oregon. But when Solstice was issued on the ECM label, it took the brilliant guitarist's caché to a much higher level, especially as a composer. With the otherworldly curved soprano sax and flute playing of Jan Garbarek, the precise drumming of Jon Christensen, and unique bass sounds of Eberhard Weber, the music on this album lifted the ECM/Euro-styled jazz and improvised music to a new realm of pure expressionism. Simply put - this music is stunningly beautiful. The incredible "Oceanus" begins with Towner's cascading guitar, followed by the swelling and symphonic bass of Weber, a swinging drum line by Christensen with Garbarek's atmospheric and dramatic curved soprano layering contrasting timbres, symmetry, and unusual colors…

The CD produced by Djabe is also a missing piece, as there is no release of The Magic Stag’s 2021 album tour yet. This is a concert recording which was made at the Liszt Hall of the University of Debrecen in 2021. With the exception of two tracks, all the tracks from The Magic Stag album is performed. The original studio album featured several guest musicians, Ferenc Muck on saxophone, Tibor Karvaly on violin and László Szabó on sitar. All the three player took part in the premiere tour, so on more than one occasion, eight musicians can be heard on stage.

The double CD was recorded during the 2024 Tour Of Waterfalls in Budapest, using 24-track analogue technology. Thanks to the excellent recording and the world-renowned sound engineering work of Tamás Barabás, once again an audiophile-quality master was created. The two CDs contain the complete concert material, mostly Djabe compositions, given a new impetus and sound by Chieli Minucci. The rest of the album features Chieli Minucci’s compositions, mostly Special EFX tracks.

Winston Rodney – the man known as Burning Spear ever since the name stopped applying to the two- or three-man group he fronted – once said that Island doesn't own any unreleased tracks from him; they only own the tracks given to them through producer Jack Ruby. This helps explain why the numerous Burning Spear compilations the label's parent company, Universal, has released differ very little in their track listings, and maybe why the Chris Blackwell mixes of Spear's albums keep rearing their watered-down heads. They are here again on the two-disc Gold, yet another compilation that covers a sliver of Burning Spear's career. But what a sliver it is. Gold focuses on Spear's early Island albums and, through the magic of major-label mergers, one album from his stint with EMI.

Duncan Mackay is a British composer, singer, arranger, and keyboard player who has recorded three solo albums. On this, his second solo album, has moved slightly away from the Keith Emerson imitations that permeated his first album. Slightly, because the Emerson sound still appears. On the first track, Witches, a somewhat Spanish sounding symphonic proc piece, Mackay plays Emerson-like riffs on a honky-tonk tack piano, similar in sound to keith's in Benny The Bouncer. Acousic piano appears throughout the album, with Mackay providing obvious Emerson-influenced sounds.
Most obvious are Spaghetti Smooch, which sounds very much like a reworking of the main sections of Tarkus, played in 7 instead of 10, and Time Is No Healer, which owes a lot to Take A Pebble…

One could say that no quiet storm compilation lacking Minnie Riperton's "Inside My Love," Rick James and Teena Marie's "Fire and Desire," or Patti Austin and James Ingram's "Baby, Come to Me" is complete. But there's simply no way to make a definitive two-disc compilation of '70s and early-'80s R&B ballads. When it comes to being representative of the quiet storm format, however, this set from Hip-O hits just about all the right spots. It covers chart-toppers and cult favorites alike, with no song undeserving of inclusion. Like most of the other titles in the Gold series, it's put together thoughtfully – two classics written by Michael Henderson (Norman Connors' MH-fronted "You Are My Starship" and the Dramatics' "Be My Girl") are placed back-to-back, for instance, and there's a smooth transition from the material featuring full-band arrangements with strings to drum machines and synthesizers.
