Woodstock and Glastonbury Fayre icon Melanie had been working with Easy Action on the deluxe vinyl and CD rerelease of one of the most legendary albums in her long catalogue prior to her very sad passing. In 1972, Melanie and her producer and husband Peter Schekeryk began work on what she intended to be her most ambitious album yet. Stoneground Words was to be a double album - the first such statement from any female rock artist. It would also be the first worldwide release on Neighborhood Records, the label she and Schekeryk established in 1971 - another first, as she entered territory into which only the Beatles, the Stones and the Moody Blues had previously stepped. Even more crucially, however, it was her personal response to the enormous success, earlier in the year, of the hit “Brand New Key” - “the bicycle song,” as so many people recall it. Stoneground Words returned to the drawing board. Ten songs were selected; the remainder were placed to one side; and the album was released to generally positive reviews which included Melody Maker’s assertion that it was “the most sophisticated she's made. The naiveté of [the past has] been replaced by deeper, more comprehensive methods of expression.” She is the first to admit that the new edition of Stoneground Words is not a true facsimile of the original. The paperwork for all three projects, after all, disappeared long ago, as did the tapes (“who knows where?”).

No talent who came out of Woodstock and who continued actively performing more than a quarter century later remained as closely associated with the 1960s and "flower power" than Melanie. Born Melanie Safka in Astoria, Queens, in 1947, she made her first public appearance at age four on a radio show, later studying at the New York Academy of Fine Arts. After mounting a singing career while in college, she later sang in clubs in Greenwich Village, and was signed to a publishing contract in 1967. She recorded her first single, "Beautiful People," for Columbia Records that same year. Her relationship with the record company was short-lived, however, and after one more single she left the label. In 1969, she chanced to meet producer Peter Schekeryk, and after a hastily arranged audition, he took charge of her career.

This vinyl LP came out in 1973. But the songs are actually from The British movie soundtrack, All The Right Noises 1971. Starring Tom Bell and Olivia Hussey. One of only two 70's albums by Melanie never to be released on CD. They planned to release in in Nov. 2016, then Dec, and then Jan. 2017. And Amazon decided not to release it on CD at all. Perhaps sales weren't as big as expected. But they let a lot of people down. Because this album is beautiful and haunting, like the movie soundtrack. If you can't find this on CD. You can order a used import vinyl copy of the soundtrack, because they are essentially the same. This will be the best music you never heard of, when you purchase it. And hopefully Amazon, will release it like they planned to in the future. - Amazon review by S. H. Newport

Melanie's solo set was short but sweet though you can hear her anxiety in her voice. She performed at 11 pm on Friday, the 15th. Melanie played instead of The Incredible String Band who refused to play while it was raining.
