A multi-talent, New York-born, Connecticut-bred Sarah Kernochan dropped out of college to pursue a writing career with the Village Voice. By her mid-20s and while still an active journalist, she co-produced and directed the fresh, penetrating Oscar-winning documentary "Marjoe" (1972), about the peripatetic evangelical work of preacher-turned-hippie actor Marjoe Gortner. Instead of using this success as a springboard for further films, Kernochan instead tried her hand as a recording artist for RCA with two solo albums of her own compositions, "House of Pain" (1973) and "Beat Around the Bush" (1974). Neither jump-started singer-songwriter's musical career so she returned to her writing career, penning the 1997 novel "Dry Hustle" and traveled extensively throughout the Middle East.

Pressure Sounds return to the classic sound of seventies roots reggae after their mento collection a month or two ago and this time it’s a long overdue compilation of productions from the Tommy Cowan camp running the gamut from deep ‘n’ dark roots such as Mother Country by the amazingly named Little Madness to Ken Boothe’s typically tortured adaptation of The Godfather theme as Speak Softly Love and incorporating pretty much everything in between.

Though this eclectic compilation is a bit heavier on the space than it is on the jazz, it is a cohesive, mood-altering tribute to the psychedelic sounds of '60s jazz legends like the Headhunters and Sun Ra. In case you weren't familiar with Quango's trademark fusionary sound, Tosca's loungey atmospherics on "Chocolate Elvis" clue you in right away, with a trippy Rastafarian intro that gives way to smooth guitar melodies, echoing organs, and syncopated programmed rhythms. Pnu Riff's off-kilter "Comfy Club" could be a lost track from the Age of Aquarius, with its kitschy vocal harmonies and Vince Guiraldi-influenced piano, while Love TKO's "Lost in the Amazon" is an otherworldly trip that matches Herbie Mann-style flute with Pink Floyd-ian organs and sound effects.
