In 1967, Nancy Sinatra would continue her artistic ascent into the pop stratosphere with the James Bond You Only Live Twice theme song, the groovy technicolor television special, Movin' With Nancy, recording one of the most beloved duets of all time, "Some Velvet Morning," and a cross-country pilgrimage to the center of the country music scene. Nancy traveled to Nashville to cut her fifth album at RCA Studios, where many of the greatest country songs of all time were recorded. On Country, My Way, Nancy fuses her own personal style with country music, resulting in a new hybrid sound. Producer Lee Hazlewood called it "hippie-billy." While many people get credit for pioneering the contemporary country sound, like many milestones of the 1960s, Nancy was one of the first. Equal parts strong, sultry, and savvy, Nancy Sinatra has long been ahead of her time-both in her choices as an artist and as a businesswoman. Musical messages from Oslo, New York, Basel and Lugano – recorded between 2018 and 2022 - are juxtaposed and recombined on an absorbing recording that features Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen solo and in a series of duets . With such partners as Craig Taborn, Chris Potter, Sinikka Langeland and Jorge Rossy, the musical frame of reference is very broad. Elements from Langeland’s’s archaic-sounding folk to Potter’s post-Coltrane saxophone and Taborn’s whirlwind modernist piano each find their place in a project that implies new threads of connectivity, new creative relationships. The album was completed and mixed by Strønen and producer Manfred Eicher at Bavaria Musikstudios in Munich in February 2023.

Taking Turns, recorded in New York’s Avatar Studio a decade ago, finds Danish guitarist Jakob Bro joined by a multi-generational cast of improvisers, highly distinctive players all. Lee Konitz, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran and Thomas Morgan lend their energies to a session that bypasses conventions of the “all-star” band and puts the emphasis on teamwork. Bro’s space-conscious music encourages fresh responses: an atmospheric hint, or a fragment of gentle melody, opening up new trails to explore. “My compositions are about catching a glimpse of a feeling, sketching it down and then unfolding it as we record”, said Jakob Bro at the time.

This smoking organ trio recording is a first for guitarist Larry Coryell and a return to his roots. In 2002, Regina Spektor was in the midst of a creative explosion. She found herself writing so many songs that she was unable to keep track of them. Her friend Joe Mendelson noticed she was forgetting some entirely, and offered to archive everything she had written that year. After Regina recorded dozens of songs, one take each, they decided to pick twelve and make them into an album. And so, Songs was born. The record includes the original versions of “Samson” and “Ne Me Quitte Pas”, later re-recorded on Begin to Hope and What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, respectively. These early recordings have now been expertly remastered by Bob Ludwig right in time for their 22nd birthday! Playable for the time ever outside of a handmade CD-R, the album will be released via streaming, CD and vinyl.

Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, recently signed to DG, releases another preview track from his long-awaited DG debut album. The album features Beethoven's impressive Hammerklavier Sonata, known to be a technically demanding work and, given its sheer size, physically demanding. The piece is complemented by Liszt's piano transcription of the song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98. "It's such a long work that it's very difficult to maintain concentration," says Nobu, who has to play every score from memory due to his blindness. "I spent a lot of time preparing for the recording and struggled with the third movement in particular. The music is not easy to make your own, but the more you play it, the more deeply you feel it. Aspects of Beethoven's experience overlap with mine - he lost his hearing and yet wrote wonderful and very difficult pieces like this sonata. That's another reason why I worked on it with the utmost respect."
