This two-LP set, which was released in 1976 as part of United Artists' Blue Note reissue series, brought back trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's early album Hub Cap, a sextet session with tenor-saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, and pianist Cedar Walton. Although that session (comprised of four Hubbard compositions, one of Walton's songs, and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not") is excellent, it is the full album of previously unreleased material from an all-star quintet that is of greatest interest. Hubbard teams up with fellow Jazz Messengers Wayne Shorter (on tenor), Walton, bassist Reggie Workman, and (in Blakey's spot) drummer Philly Joe Jones for some advanced hard bop. Highpoints include the fiery "Philly Mignon" and a strong version of "Body and Soul."

For reasons unknown, it took over two decades for Henry Mancini's score for the smash 1983 television miniseries The Thorn Birds to earn an official soundtrack release, but Varèse Sarabande's lavish two-disc release proves worth the wait. Nor has time dimmed The Thorn Birds' power – this deeply romantic, intimate score remains one of Mancini's most stirring, rivaling the composer's most legendary big-screen efforts. Mancini eschews epic drama in favor of smaller-scale nuance, evoking the doomed romance of novelist Colleen McCullough's tale in finely honed strokes. The music is elegant yet understated, rich in variety but amounting to something far greater than the sum of its disparate elements.

And while Anekdoten's work has never been groundbreaking, much of it has been of a high quality. That high quality is evident on Chapters, a two-CD anthology that was assembled in 2009. One of French pop's most poetic songwriters, Georges Brassens was also a highly acclaimed and much-beloved performer in his own right. Not only a brilliant manipulator of language and a feted poet in his own right, Brassens was also renowned for his subversive streak, satirizing religion, class, social conformity, and moral hypocrisy with a wicked glee. Yet beneath that surface was a compassionate concern for his fellow man, particularly the disadvantaged and desperate. His personal politics were forged during the Nazi occupation, and while his views on freedom bordered on anarchism, his songs expressed those convictions more subtly than those of his contemporary, Léo Ferré. Though he was a skilled songwriter, Brassens had little formal musical training, and he generally kept things uncomplicated – simple melodies and spare accompaniment from a bass and second guitar. Along with Jacques Brel, he became one of the most unique voices on the French cabaret circuit, and exerted a tremendous influence on many other singers and songwriters of the postwar era. His poetry and lyrics are still studied as part of France's standard educational curriculum.

After becoming successful, he bought properties in California, one of which, in Malibu, burned to the ground in the 2018 Woolsey Fire. In 1970. Young purchased Broken Arrow Ranch (which he named after the Buffalo Springfield song) , a property of about 1,000 acres near La Honda, California (population 979 at the 2020 census) for US$350,000 (US$2.7 million in 2023 dollars); the property was subsequently expanded to thousands of acres.

The iboga plant is indigenous to the humid, tropical climates of West Central Africa, including Gabon, Cameroon, Congo, and Angola, which are home to the 2nd largest rainforest in the world. It has been used for centuries in spiritual initiation ceremonies and practices, particularly by the Bwiti tradition and religion in Gabon. Joaquin Joe Claussell was inspired by these influences and went into the studio to create a compilation of edits and overdubs of African vibrational sounds and rhythms. The result is a collection of eleven compositions that showcase the future possibilities of this influential work.

In the summer of 1934 he wrote his highly virtuoso "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" for piano and orchestra, and a year later his 3rd symphony.

The back cover of this Czech release promises "certainly the most intense chamber programme that might be dedicated to the joint memory of Sviatoslav Richter and Dmitry Shostakovich," and the performances live up to the billing. The first half of the program is given over to a pair of string quartets from the year 1960, around the point where Shostakovich's inward turn following his denunciation by Soviet cultural commissars merged with his reflections on the violence of modern war to create a uniquely modern tragic dialogue.

Another French baroque opera composer, Henry Desmarest, resurfaces after centuries of obscurity. Vénus & Adonis, first seen in 1697 in Paris, was composed in the midst of a scandal, when Desmarest eloped with a young singer who was the daughter of a powerful official. In his absence, he was sentenced to death and thus effectively exiled until his pardon in 1720. The opera’s theme of illicit love seems to have fired Desmarest’s imagination, and the stylish cast, headed by Karine Deshayes and Sébastien Droy, responds in kind. One senses, too, rare involvement in the playing of Les Talens Lyriques. More Desmarest operas await.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich may not be a household name across the pond, but the British five-piece spent more time on the U.K. charts in the late '60s than the Beatles did. Universal's Very Best of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich collects 22 cuts from the infectious, Wilshire-based pop/bubblegum quintet, including "Legend of Xanadu," "Bend It," "Zabadak!," "Okay!" and "Hold Tight!" The latter was resurrected by director Quentin Tarantino in 2007 for the film Deathproof. Like 2000s Polygram International collection Best of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, all of the major hits are here, though this time around they're buffered by an oddball caché of bonus tracks that includes covers of the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love," "In Dreams" by Roy Orbison, and a medley of "Stairway to Heaven" and "Pinball Wizard" by Led Zeppelin and the Who, respectively.
