Later work by Don Patterson - one of the best, and most free-swinging of the 60s soul jazz organists - recorded here in the early 70's, with the same tight organ jazz feel as his records for Prestige! Eddie Daniels plays tenor, alto, and soprano on the album - and the rest of the group includes Ted Dunbar on guitar, and the great Freddie Waits on drums. The quartet plays nice long takes of some groovy contemporary tunes, like "Theme from The Odd Couple" and "Theme from Love Story", both of which come across amazingly well - plus the original tune "Jesse Jackson", and a version of Jimmy Garrison's "Lori".

This release is likely to get a good deal of publicity due to its status as the final release of Stephen Cleobury as director of the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. However, as president of the Herbert Howells Society, he may not be through with performing the music of this composer just yet. Cleobury deserves kudos for this rather challenging double album; he might easily have compiled a set of favorites of some kind, and enjoyed general acclaim. Instead, he has chosen to go out with a piece of work that makes a deeper connection with tradition. Even though he did not succeed Howells as an organist at Cambridge, he certainly lived and breathed his music, and is as fine an interpreter of it as anyone alive.

The conducting of Simon Rattle is the most compelling element in this recording of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges with the Berlin Philharmonic. Rattle draws playing of great delicacy and nuance from the orchestra, and the many sections that are scored as lightly as chamber music are played with especially loving attention to shaping the elegant and expressive phrases; the beginning of the second part of the opera is especially magical.

Having dazzled us with her coloratura ability in arias by Mozart, Gluck, and her fellow Czech, Myslivecek, this luscious young mezzo-soprano now offers us a generous program of French arias–15 of them, widely varied in tone, weight, dramatic intent, and style–and conquers and convinces in them all. Beginning again in coloratura territory, an aria from Auber's rare Le domino noir catches our attention with the heroine's opening words, "Je suis sauvée enfin!" ("I am safe at last!"), in which she paints the picture of our out-of-breath heroine immediately.

Playing a melodious synthesis of symphonic hard rock that has occasionally been compared to Pink Floyd, Hanover Krautrockers Jane can trace their origins back to the late sixties psychedelic band Justice Of Peace. Releasing a single Save Me/War, the band featured future Jane members Peter Panka on vocals, Klaus Hess on bass and Werner Nadolny on saxophone. By late 1970 Justice Of Peace had dissolved and regrouped as Jane with Panka on vocals and drums, Hess switching to guitar and Nadolny assuming keyboards. Charly Maucher joined on bass and power vocalist Berndt Pulst completed the band in April 1971 and their first LP "Together" was released in the spring of 1972. Singing in broken English, which helped create passionate effects, a heavy expressive bluesy sound emerged with blistering Les Paul solos and slabs of Hammond organ backdrops…

The seventh year of the successful series "Jazz thing Next Generation" is starting with an extraordinary piano trio. Tim Allhoff, born in Augsburg in 1980, already started playing piano – self-taught – as a child, had the benefit of classical piano lessons later and then studied jazz piano at the Richard-Strauss Conservatory in Munich. He graduated with "magna cum laude" in 2007. The fact that he is a sideman much in demand in southern Germany goes without saying.

Any band that's released nearly as many compilations as studio albums in the past 15 years certainly doesn't need another one, but International appeared anyway, and though it's slightly better than The Best of New Order, it's not nearly as solid as Substance. Beginning with New Order's recorded debut, 1981's "Ceremony," the collection proceeds immediately to the group's worldwide breakout with 1983's "Blue Monday," then slots mid-'80s classics "Confusion," "The Perfect Kiss," and "Bizarre Love Triangle." It certainly didn't need three tracks from 2001's Get Ready. Most of the tracks are album versions, though the compilers made wise choices on remixes of "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Touched by the Hand of God." As befits a middling compilation from an excellent band, International is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition.

'Reunion Live' reunites three guitar giants for a sonic celebration that renews a tradition stretching back to 1996. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson inaugurated the G3 concept 28 years ago which put them on stage together for the first time ever. The G3 tour line up changed over the years, but in 2024, the original G3 reunited for a sold-out run of dates in the US. That experience is embodied in G3 'Reunion Live' (and much more than 'just' a live album). The format of the tour is mirrored here with a full set from each guitarist with their own band, followed by a full-on jam featuring all three. The individual repertoire is comprised of signature tunes from each guitarist such as Joe's 'Sahara', Steve's 'For the Love of God' and Eric's 'Cliffs of Dover'. The encore jam features covers from the likes of Hendrix and Clapton.

COLLECTION OF PREVIOUSLY UNEARTHED OBSCURITIES Formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and vocalist Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, the members of Derek and The Dominos had previously played together in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, during and after Clapton's brief tenure with Blind Faith. Dave Mason supplied additional lead guitar on early studio sessions and played at their first live gig. Another participant at their first session as a band was George Harrison, the recording for whose All Things Must Pass marked the formation of Derek and the Dominos. Releasing only one studio album during their short time together as a group, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was produced by Tom Dowd and featured extensive contributions on lead and slide guitar from Duane Allman. A double album, Layla did not immediately enjoy strong sales or receive widespread radio play, but went on to earn huge critical acclaim. Although released in 1970 it was not until March 72 that the album's title track Layla made the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career. While there have been a number of rare studio jams and live tracks released since, on reissues and other collector s items, the tracks now featured on this rarities collection remain previously unreleased. Including as it does rare outtakes from the sessions for the Dominos aborted second album, live obscurities and a range of other essential but not previously available cuts, this selection will prove a delight for Clapton/Dominos/Allman fans, acting as it will as a compilation to fill those annoying gaps in even the most complete collections.

Iconic British rock band The Who gracing us with their collection of rarities which put many a regular studio album to shame. Fans of the band's classic 1974 hard rock period who only own the proper albums really need to get 'Odds & Sods' to complete their collection. It's considered by many, the lost scrolls wrapped around the Golden Chalice. It is a fascinating mix of lost treasures, exciting misfires, and just plain weird Who artifacts. For instance their very first single, "I'm the Face," recorded in 1964 when the group were known as the High Numbers.
