In 2002, Regina Spektor was in the midst of a creative explosion. She found herself writing so many songs that she was unable to keep track of them. Her friend Joe Mendelson noticed she was forgetting some entirely, and offered to archive everything she had written that year. After Regina recorded dozens of songs, one take each, they decided to pick twelve and make them into an album. And so, Songs was born. The record includes the original versions of “Samson” and “Ne Me Quitte Pas”, later re-recorded on Begin to Hope and What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, respectively. These early recordings have now been expertly remastered by Bob Ludwig right in time for their 22nd birthday! Playable for the time ever outside of a handmade CD-R, the album will be released via streaming, CD and vinyl.

Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, recently signed to DG, releases another preview track from his long-awaited DG debut album. The album features Beethoven's impressive Hammerklavier Sonata, known to be a technically demanding work and, given its sheer size, physically demanding. The piece is complemented by Liszt's piano transcription of the song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98. "It's such a long work that it's very difficult to maintain concentration," says Nobu, who has to play every score from memory due to his blindness. "I spent a lot of time preparing for the recording and struggled with the third movement in particular. The music is not easy to make your own, but the more you play it, the more deeply you feel it. Aspects of Beethoven's experience overlap with mine - he lost his hearing and yet wrote wonderful and very difficult pieces like this sonata. That's another reason why I worked on it with the utmost respect."

Sugar was the fourth album recorded by Nancy Sinatra in 1966, an uncanny feat considering The Beatles were recording around two albums a year at the time. The iconic Ron Joy cover photo of Nancy in a pink bikini (the first on an album cover!) was a daring move in 1967 that helped propel the album to #18 on the charts (Nancy's second highest charting album after Boots). It is a peculiar record that pairs one of Nancy's biggest songs, "Sugar Town," with mostly 1920s compositions recorded in a contemporary Dixieland jazz pop fusion style that could have only been concocted by producer Lee Hazlewood. Equal parts strong, sultry, and savvy, Nancy Sinatra has long been ahead of her time-both in her choices as an artist and as a businesswoman. Unapologetically, she established her own path early on and paved the way for decades of female artists to come-all while firmly maintaining control over her career, her image, and her music. In 1965, Nancy Sinatra changed the face of music, fashion, and culture.

2024 release. In a career spanning 50 years, Leo Sayer has sold more than 80 million records worldwide. 1992 is Leo's new album and how this project came about is the story of a 'lost album' but let Leo explain… "Between 1992-94, I didn't have a record deal and had just signed a 'new songs' publishing deal. I'd built a studio in London, determined that a prolific phase in my career was not going to be wasted. I wrote around 30 songs solo, which I started to produce and record by myself, ably assisted by musicians who were playing live with me at the time. I was on a roll and just couldn't stop making music, recording all this at two of my then home studios, as well as mixing and overdubbing at Mayfair Studios, London, and Touchdown Studios in Munich. Once it was all finished, and inspired by the ideas that just kept flowing, no one seemed to 'get' what I was doing. But I knew I had something good, and this just spurred me on even more. The songs on '1992' are all from that same period, and are here exactly as recorded at the time, no additional work having been done on them since. That is, except that the work my trusty mix engineer, John Hudson, has been doing in matching up and mastering the tracks, and we are both proud of the results. I've always been proud of these songs, and it's been tough keeping a secret for 30 years!"

Tolliver was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1942 and moved with his family to New York City when he was 10. During his childhood, his grandmother gave him his first horn, a cornet he had coveted. Tolliver was attending Howard University in the early 1960s as a pharmacy major, when he decided to pursue music as a career and return home to New York City. He came to prominence in 1964, playing and recording on Jackie McLean's Blue Note albums. In 1971, Tolliver and Stanley Cowell founded Strata-East Records, and Tolliver released many albums and collaborations on Strata-East. Live at Captain's Cabin is a newly discovered gem from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that finds Music Inc in absolutely fine form at a club called the Captain's Cabin. Playing mostly original music from Tolliver the band let's loose in the live setting. In his words The players I had, John Hicks, Clint Houston and Cliff Barbaro. I just let them go do their thing and I didn't rein them in so we could have some pretty wild renditions of things, which if I were to do it now with a different rhythm section, it would sound different. It would be different. But I think that 50 something years ago that we were just expressing the exuberance of playing together and being on the road and the songs that I composed at that time, a few of them I still play, are completely different. This is recording is an incredible document from an amazing band that was continually pushing boundaries. Double CD. Previously unissued live recording from 1973 Remastered audio transferred from the original tape reels Includes extensive booklet with rare photo, and essay by renowned writer Angelika Beener, an interview with Tolliver by Jeremy Pelt and more!

rild Andersen, one of jazz’s most widely acclaimed bassists, presents his first solo album. Characteristically broad in its musical scope and creative range, Landloper was recorded primarily at Oslo’s Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene (with one piece recorded at Arild’s home). Choice of repertoire in this recital reflects on Arild’s artistic journey, and, alongside Andersen originals (“Dreamhorse”, “Mira”, “Landloper”), we find Norwegian traditional music (“Old Stev”), a romantic jazz standard (“A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square”), and new light cast upon free jazz classics (Albert Ayler’s “Ghosts”, Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman”, Charlie Haden’s “Song for Che”). Andersen’s performances combine his masterful bass playing with real-time creation of electronic loops that bring an atmospheric dimension to solo playing and fresh opportunities for interaction.

Although never released until recently, Jazz Sabbath's music has been finding its way to millions for over 50 years. Through a vicious cycle of personal tragedy and plagiarism the songs intended to change the jazz world ended up giving birth to a much darker sound. Now a third recording from the Sixties has resurfaced, perhaps their most important one. In 1968 Jazz Sabbath were an instant hit on the UK jazz scene. It wasn’t long until they were offered a record deal. They spent weeks in the studio recording the tracks that got the heaviest reactions at their shows until they captured their live energy on tape. Unfortunately, the label manager told them the album was far too experimental and there was no hit potential. Ordered to play some of their ‘easier’ tracks instead, they reluctantly gave in.

Five CD set bringing a comprehensive, big-tent look at the early years of punk rock in the US and Canada. Over six hours of music. Includes benchmark tracks by the scene's most influential bands plus many rare singles making their first appearance on CD. This five CD includes influential NYC bands - Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Television, Blondie, The Voidoids, etc. - as well as the scene's other pioneers such as Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys (both Cleveland, Ohio), Dead Kennedys and Crime (San Francisco), Devo (Akron, Ohio), The Germs and The Weirdos (Los Angeles) and Mission of Burma (Boston, Massachusetts). Blank Generation offers a deliberately broad definition of punk, encompassing contributions from such outré acts as Suicide, The Cramps and The Residents through to new wave/power pop combos (Sneakers, Chris Stamey & the dB's, etc.). While the US punk scene was arguably always more diverse musically than that of the UK, the music evolved quickly, as evinced by the choices heard on Discs 4 and 5. Many of the acts here such as X, The Replacements, The Feelies, Redd Kross, The Dream Syndicate, The Gun Club and Minor Threat would make an even greater impact as the 1980s wore on. It's hard to overestimate the seismic shocks caused by the music on 'Blank Generation', not only on everything in alternative music which followed in North American, from the 80s hardcore scene and the music heard on the whole alternative college radio network through to grunge and beyond. And yet this era has never before been treated to a comprehensive retrospective of this kind.

There is something truly majestic in the guitar playing and composing of Luiz Bonfá. From solo dates such as 1959's Solo in Rio (issued stateside by Smithsonian Folkways) to his 1972 masterpiece, Introspection, his sound is as telltale as the two other Brazilian guitar greats, Baden Powell and Djalma de Andrade (aka Bola Sete). Bonfá's elegance in style is what sets him apart from even these great masters. There is something utterly unhurried and gentle about his manner of playing, even during its most intense moments or in the most decorative settings (there were a lot of those during the bossa craze). The Brazilian Scene, released in 1965 on the Philips imprint, sits right on the knife edge between something as wonderfully organic as his solo recordings and the more stylized Anglo projects that were flooding the bins at the time…

Released in September 1997, Subterranea was quickly hailed by most progressive rock critics as a masterpiece and became one of the very few "classic" albums this style brought forth in 1990s. The two-CD, 103-minute concept album is indeed IQ's strongest effort and would even eclipse The Wake, if it weren't for the historical significance of the 1985 LP. An obscure story of subterranean beings, life-and-death chase, and initiatory quest packed with metaphorical implications, Subterranea, as a concept, is typical Peter Nicholls; all lyrics remain vague, only suggesting emotions and bits of plot, but to phenomenal results. The easy comparison would be Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and, yes, there is something of that in here, but the meaning of this album is even more cryptic…

A single 20-minute track recorded in the early '80s but never available in anything like its full form, Video 586 is a pure synthesizer track except for Peter Hook's rumbling low-end. Reminiscent of an extended mid-tempo dub of the early single "Everything's Gone Green," the track plods occasionally but is remarkable purely for its view of New Order as a synthesizer band in the midst of the crossover-heavy synth-pop crowd of the early '80s.
