Dr Thomas Arne was a real tunesmith, and this charming collection shows him at his best. Although Arne was heavily influenced by Handel (what Englishman of his generation could avoid this?) he was his own man, and no slavish plagiarist; something that needs to be said of an era, before binding copyrights, when even the great Handel could stoop to this level! It is known that Arne also admired the music of the Venetian Galuppi who visited London in the 1740s. The enchanting 'the Lover's Recantation', sung here beautifully by Emma Kirkby, will remind anyone familiar with Galuppi's comic operas of that composer's style.

Some of the connections with Venice may be a little tenuous, and this particular Winged Lion even circles over Spain clutching a Venetian guitar. The Palladian Ensemble's debut disc was called An Excess of Pleasure; the sequal offers nothing less! From two gutsy Vivaldi concertos via the dashing caprice of Santiago de Murcia's La Jota to a canzon by Cavalli which discharges itself in a haunting echo of Monteverdi's Lamento della Ninfa, the programme continually surprises and enchants. The playing too.

The pianist Ekaterina Litvintseva won critical praise for her solo album on Piano Classics (PCL10226) of piano music by Dora Pejacevic: 'You owe it to yourself to make the acquaintance of Dora Pejacevic if you haven't done so already.' (Fanfare, May 2022) With her colleagues in Trio RoVerde, she now turns to the Croatian composer's chamber music. The Cello Sonata dates from 1913, the same year as Pejacevic wrote the first piano concerto by any Croatian composer. Like Brahms's First Cello Sonata and Elgar's Cello Concerto, it is cast in a moody E minor, with a yearning character are established from the outset by a long-limbed cantabile melody for the cellist.

‘The Big Dream‘, the sophomore album from David Lynch, was one of 2013’s most acclaimed albums, being lauded for it’s striking singularity and extraordinary breadth of vision. Now it has been reborn as a Super Deluxe edition in the form of a stylish limited edition box set, of which there are only 500 produced worldwide. The Super Deluxe box set includes a triple disk featuring the full-length album, exclusive bonus tracks and remixes, as well as instrumental versions of all the original songs. There are also remixes of album tracks by the likes of Bastille, Hot Since 82, Bjorn Yttling and Venetian Snares, who twists the title track into something far from your typical dance remix.

In addition to his prodigious careers as a director, writer, producer, sound designer, and carpenter (to name a few), David Lynch also stretched his artistic reach to music. He collaborated heavily with his go-to composer Angelo Badalamenti on the scores and soundtracks to his projects, including the music for Blue Velvet, 1990's iconic Twin Peaks soundtrack, and Mulholland Drive. He also collaborated, with and without Badalamenti, on pop albums such as Julee Cruise's Floating into the Night (which featured songs she performed on the Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks soundtracks) and jazz guitarist David Jaurequi's Fox Bat Strategy. Lynch teamed with sound engineer John Neff for Blue Bob, a one-off project that the duo recorded in Lynch's home studio. The director worked with Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous on Dark Night of the Soul, a project that featured Lynch's photography and Linkous and Danger Mouse's music, and also included a song sung by Lynch. Though the project was intended for release in 2009, legal issues prevented it from being distributed until mid-2010. Later that year, Lynch released the double-sided debut single Good Day Today/I Know, which was released by the U.K. imprint Sunday Best. Featuring Lynch on vocals and all instruments, the single was given a physical release in early 2011 and featured artwork by 4AD designer Vaughan Oliver. A full album, Crazy Clown Time, followed in 2011. Lynch returned with his second album, the avant rock/blues fusion Big Dream, in mid-2013. In 2015, Sacred Bones reissued Polish Night Music, a 2007 collaboration with pianist/composer Marek Zebrowski that they recorded while the director was working on the film Inland Empire.

William Fitzsimmons has made his living writing a specific brand of honest and inward-looking folk songs that fearlessly and candidly examine the evolving self while dexterously communicating his talent for robust melodies and catchy instrumentation. Beginning with his debut album, Until When We Are Ghosts, he generated hundreds of millions of streams across fan-favorite albums such as Gold In The Shadow [2011], Lions [2014], and Pittsburgh [2015]. He landed significant syncs on ABC, NBC, MTV, Lifetime, and The CW. Notably, NPR once dubbed him "A Songwriter With Vision," and he incited the applause of American Songwriter, Billboard, NYLON, Pop Matters, Rolling Stone, Q Magazine, Uncut, and more. Now, William returns with quite possibly the most ambitious release of his career. The Illinois-based singer-songwriter and producer focuses on the wonder, humanity, and beauty of our interactions with one another and explores this phenomenon's effect on his own life via his eighth full-length Incidental Contact. Fitzsimmons pays homage to his late stepmother, who passed away in November 2022 with this album. She entered William's life 25 years earlier upon marrying his father. In the wake of this loss, William chose to memorialize her and celebrate her memory in the best way he could-by writing and recording what would become Incidental Contact.

Listening to Lee Morgan blow his molten solo on “A Night In Tunisia,” the opening track of The Cooker, it’s hard to fathom that he was only 19 years old at the time. Recorded just 2 weeks after Morgan’s dazzling performance on John Coltrane’s masterpiece Blue Train in September 1957, The Cooker was in fact Morgan’s 5th Blue Note album as a leader. Bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones (both of whom also played on Blue Train) are joined by baritone saxophone master Pepper Adams and the great Bobby Timmons on piano on this superbly swinging session.

After making a promising start with their self-titled debut, Loverboy hit the big time in 1981 with Get Lucky. This canny combination of AOR hooks and new wave production gloss boasts some memorable radio-ready tunes but isn't as solid an album as its success might lead one to believe. The best tunes on Get Lucky were the songs that became its hit singles: "Working for the Weekend" is a party anthem that blends some gutsy hard-rock guitar riffs with a synthesizer-drenched new wave rhythm arrangement to become a huge hit, while "The Lucky Ones" layers clever lyrics about the jealousy that success inspires in others over a song that mixes pomp rock grandeur with a punchy AOR arrangement full of gutsy yet slick guitar riffs.

So Lonely in Heaven' is The Legendary Pink Dots' second album since the World stopped for a Global Pandemic. With members scattered across three countries and two continents, our guilty confession is that quite a few Air Miles were consumed in its creation. Ideas were spun across Cyberspace for months, but the magic happened collectively in small spaces with the tape running. THE MESSAGE The machine is everything we are. It sees everything, hears everything, knows everything and feeds, speeds, drinks us down, spits us out - we lost control of it at the instant of its conception. You may cough, curse and die, but the machine will resurrect you without the flaws, at your peak, smiling from a screen, bidding someone in a lonely room to join you. It's an invitation from Heaven, where anyone can be anything they want to be, but it's a Nation of One. You'll be everything we are. You'll be a shadow of yourself. You'll repeat yourself- endlessly. You'll be desperate for some kind of explanation . You'll be lonely. So very lonely… The Pink Dots are: Erik Drost- Acoustic and Electric Guitars, bass guitar; Randall Frazier- synthesisers, devices; Edward Ka-Spel - Voice, devices; Joep Hendrikx - live electronics, devices.

Justin Hinds & the Dominoes were one of the most popular vocal groups during the ska and rocksteady era, but Hinds was a country boy at heart, and with the rise of reggae he returned to his rural home. Thus the group disappeared from view for most of the first half of the '70s, but by 1975, producer L. "Jack Ruby" Lindo coaxed Hinds to Kingston, and the trio back into the studio. The musical scene had shifted dramatically during the interim, with the pusillanimous freneticism of early reggae slowing into the denser and more atmospheric sound of roots. And here, Hinds and company were right at home.
