In this recording entitled Enigma Fortuna, the ensemble La Fonte Musica, directed by Michele Pasotti, aims to shed light on the mysterious and eccentric personality of Antonio Zacara da Teramo (1355-1416). A contemporary of Boccaccio, Donatello and Brunelleschi, this composer from the Abruzzi region could almost be likened to a sort of musical Hieronymus Bosch, for the texts he set to music conjure up a ‘topsy-turvy universe’ where the obscene, the imaginary and the grotesque go hand in hand. In his ballata Amor ne tossa he writes ‘Let him understand me who can, for I understand myself’, foreshadowing the proud egotism of the Romantic artists who were to come 400 years after him. With this four-CD set presenting the world premiere of Zacara’s complete works, La Fonte Musica offers us an initial approach to understanding his music. And thereby, through the timeless character of art, to understanding a so-called ‘renascent’ era that seems as ‘topsy-turvy’ as our own.

The soundtrack to director Ron Howard's 1995 blockbuster Apollo 13 effectively blends dialogue, actual audio clips from newscasts, classic songs, and portions of conductor James Horner's original score, creating a worthy aural companion. Included are songs from the period of the titular spacecraft's peril-fraught mission, such as the Young Rascals' "Groovin'," Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love," the Who's "I Can See for Miles," and a classy version of the oft-covered "Blue Moon" by the Mavericks (produced by Nick Lowe). The orchestrated score manages to capture the drama of the events in a manner that ranges from quietly stirring to sweepingly epic, with Eurythmic Annie Lennox adding her distinctive, ethereal vocal accompaniment to several of the cuts.

It is my opinion that Jean Langlais has written some of the noblest, richest and most awe-inspiring sacred music there has ever been. He wrote more organ music than J. S. Bach, and most of it is as suitable for liturgical performance as sung music. His style is a powerful mixture of chant-like motifs (including actual quotations from Gregorian chant), organum, and bold dissonances that give way to pure, radiant tonality. He draws on a wide range of expressions too, from radiant and blazing to quiet and ecstatic. He was truly a craftsman of the highest calibre, and a credit to the distinguished musical heritage of his native France.

Raven presents two landmark albums by legendary multi-instrumentalist, producer and solo artist Al Kooper. Few American musicians have pursued a more diverse or fascinating career than Kooper. As well as playing organ on Bob Dylan's timeless "Like a Rolling Stone", having formed Blood Sweat & Tears and produced Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kooper has issued a dozen solo albums. His 1968 debut I STAND ALONE incorporates pop and soul, jazz and classical elements, making for a seamless and enjoyable whole. As well as covers of "Hey, Western Union Man", "Coloured Rain," and "Blue Moon of Kentucky", Kooper excels with classy originals "I Can Love a Woman" and "Right Now for You". YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE (1969) ups the ante with the brassy "Magic in My Socks", the swooping, soulful "Loretta (Union Turnpike Eulogy)" and "I Don't Know Why I Love You". This top-value package of these two timeless albums comes complete with seven bonus tracks and showcases Kooper's incredible musicianship at its creative peak.

Christmas came early in 1971; in May, Atlantic released Plastic Dreams, the penultimate studio album from the Modern Jazz Quartet during their main, 22-year run as an ensemble. Of the MJQ's albums, Plastic Dreams has never been a critic's favorite, and was an album that mystified many of the group's longtime followers. First was the gatefold front cover, which featured a "plastic" image of a nude woman that was really pushing the envelope by 1971 standards; it was almost "indecent." Second, the liner notes by arch-New York jazz critic Martin Williams, while appreciative, really made you wonder if Williams was listening to the same album you were…

John Mayer's 2013 album, the Americana-tinged Paradise Valley, is an introspective if somewhat more upbeat affair than his similarly country-inflected 2012 release, Born and Raised. With that album, Mayer was coming off a rough career patch that found him issuing a mea culpa for an infamously loose-lipped 2010 Rolling Stone interview. Making matters worse, in 2011 the singer/songwriter announced he would be going on extended hiatus from performing while he received treatment for granulomas found near his vocal cords. Subsequently, with Born and Raised, Mayer moved away from the commercial pop of 2010's Battle Studies and toward an intimate, largely acoustic, '70s Laurel Canyon-inspired sound with songs that featured plenty of apologetic soul-searching.

It can't come as a surprise that the Mars Volta's fourth album opens with a bang - sonic terrorism is one of the only things listeners can count on from the band - but it's genuinely novel that The Bedlam in Goliath never lets go of its momentum, not even after a full hour's worth of unrelenting war on silence, the wrapping paper for a concept album about the power of the occult. On their first three proper albums, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez played games of quiet-loud-quiet (or loud-quiet-loud), sneaking around stealthily for minutes at a time before detonating another blast of thrash metal riffing and piercing screams. The Bedlam in Goliath is simply loud-loud-loud, virtually every song played at maximum volume and tempo…

Allan Taylor is one of England's most-respected singer/songwriters. His songs have been covered by artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including Don Williams, Frankie Miller, Fairport Convention, Dick Gaughan, the McCalmans, the Fureys, the Clancy Brothers, and De Dannan. Folk Roots praised him for his "ability to crystallize a mood and evoke an era with the ease of a computer memory access, crafting perfect songs with dramatic changes in the spirit of Brecht, Bikel, and Brel." The Oxford Book of Traditional Verse felt as strongly, writing that Taylor was "one of the most literate and sensitive of contemporary songwriters in terms of words and music and one who is capable of exploring more complex subjects than most of his contemporaries."

Fluid Audio and Handstitched have joined forces to release this album by Hessien entitled "Obelisk | Stelea" including exclusive reworking of the original source material by Solo Andata, Jasper TX, Zelienople and Konntinent… Surprising astrologists everywhere, Hessien continue to generate spontaneously out of the ether near the equator, somewhere between Australia and the UK. The most recent occurrence being "Obelisk|Stelea", constructed in between the north-south divide.
"Obelisk" - as Hessien's landscape evolves, the sound continues to push into an environment littered with obstacles. Although not obvious at first, there is a relationship between these objects; a focus on submerged, hazy rhythms and textures that mirror the unconventional landscapes and surrounds…

This is a fine recording of the requiem although shorter than norm due to it's revised construction. Nevertheless, it is very pleasing and well suited to the smaller ensemble. It hardly requires me to remark on the excellence of the King's College choir which adds considerably to the listening pleasure. In addition, this is a Super Audio CD (SACD) ensuring a high quality of sound recording.

Since the composition of The Protecting Veil in 1987, the cello has played an important role in John Tavener's music. Even when he was writing for instruments during the 1989-1995 period when the music on Svyati originated, Tavener's works carried strong overtones of Russian Orthodox church services, and the cello here, as Tavener himself points out, sometimes seems to stand in for the voice of a priest. These pieces have been recorded before, but cellist Steven Isserlis, who premiered The Protecting Veil and some of the works included here, sheds valuable light on this phase of Tavener's career by bringing them together on one disc.

Pastorius was best known as the flamboyant bassist in Weather Report (1976-81), the man who would throw talcum powder on the stage so he could slide-shuffle on one foot while playing a driving samba riff. But as this extraordinary 1976 debut shows, he was a musical star long before international celebrity called. Though often dismissed as a fusion player, he was championing bebop ("Donna Lee") just as fusion was in its first flush of juvenile excess. He was no purist though, and one of the joys of this album is the range of music he covers, from jazz to soul to samba to afro-beat, giving it all his unmistakable signature. Virtuosity, a dirty word in some circles, was never abused in Jaco's hands. The brilliant playing on such as "Kuru" and "Portrait Of Tracy" is all in the service of musicality, and became a benchmark for a generation of bass players.

Not only is Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne one of our foremost contemporary blues and boogie pianists, he's also extraordinarily well-versed on his chosen genre's proud history. Blues from Chicago to Paris pays rousing tribute to two of Chicago's postwar blues legends, piano-pounding Memphis Slim and bass-slapping powerhouse Willie Dixon. Focused in particular on the period when the two giants of the genre teamed up to tour the globe during the late 1950s and early '60s, the album presents a well-rounded collection of favorite songs as well as those innovative tunes that have inspired and influenced blues players ever since.

This is a perfect example of an album that just flew below the radar like some stealth bomber, unseen and sadly, unheard. Kind of odd though as all the ingredients are there to enjoy, featuring a remarkable ivoryman in Max Hunt, a stellar guitarist in Nick Beere, rugged bass from Justin Tilbrook , a solid Tony Wells on the kit and , last but not least , Bob Leek the sensational vocalist that simply haunts throughout this brilliant record. His voice is somewhat close to the vocalist of 80s synth-pop band Naked Eyes, Peter Byrne.
