Naples was famous throughout Europe in the 17th century for the variety of musical performances that took place during the course of the church year. Christmas was one of the feasts that was celebrated with particular splendour. On the present CD, the Ensemble Odyssee under the direction of Andrea Friggi introduces Nocturnes and Pastorals composed by Gaetano Veneziano (1656-1716) for the liturgy of Christmas services.

The musicians of the Tonkunstler Orchestra – and especially their concertmaster Kirill Maximov in soloist mode – want to tell you some fabulous stories. There can be few other orchestral pieces that capture the imagination as directly as Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical tales from the «Thousand and One Nights». Violin concerto? Symphonic poem? Or suite? «Scheherazade», written in the summer of 1888, has a little of each, or even better: everything in one! The four movements have names like «The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship» and «Festival at Baghdad»; the musical bor- rowings come from Persia, India and the Caucasus. Emmanuel Tjeknavorian chose this work for his first ever CD production as conductor of a full symphony orchestra because he has an emo- tional connection to it. He explains why in his deeply personal message in the booklet. The young violinist, now increasingly making a name for himself as a conductor, has complemented «Scheherazade» with other showpieces of the Russian orchestral repertoire by Mikhail Glinka and Aleksandr Borodin.

Around 1490, the painter Hans Memling created his "Concert of Angels". It consists of three paintings for the outside of an altar and shows God the Father surrounded by angels singing and playing instruments. What might the music have sounded like that inspired Memling to this painting? Very precisely, the painter depicted the instruments of his time, grouped into the 'alta' and 'bassa capella' typical of the period-the loud and the quiet instruments. Together with the Koninklijk Museumvoor Schone Kunstenin Antwerp, where Memling's paintings hang today, Wim Becu initiated an interdisciplinary project in which the depicted instruments were recreated in detail by specialists in instrument making and research was carried out to find thematically appropriate music.

The music of William Wordsworth (1908–88) – a great-great-grandson of the poet’s brother Christopher – lies downstream from that of Vaughan Williams and Sibelius; like that of his contemporary Edmund Rubbra, Wordsworth’s music unfolds spontaneously, as a natural process. This third volume of his orchestral works brings two major scores in their first studio recordings. Wordsworth’s Cello Concerto is a work of symphonic proportions, blending angular rough-and-tumble with a sober lyricism in a style that sits somewhere between Shostakovich and Bloch. The Fifth Symphony has an even grander sense of scale, its radiant first movement and the introduction to the confident finale unfolding as calmly and unhurriedly as a change of season; the martial tone of the gruff scherzo, by contrast, is laced through by an impish sense of humour.

New music is often enough hermetic and aloof? Not at all - when you see on Dorrit Bauerecker's new CD how the Cologne-based pianist, accordionist and performer creates clever dramaturgies. The look of the cover already suggests this impression: Your tools are accordion and concert grand piano, which is often "taken apart" - and where playful or tonal possibilities are questioned, what happens here on the toy piano and melodica.

Charlie Parker was a legendary Grammy Award–winning jazz saxophonist who, with Dizzy Gillespie, invented the musical style called bop or bebop. Charlie Parker was born on August 29, 1920, in Kansas City, Kansas. From 1935 to 1939, he played the Missouri nightclub scene with local jazz and blues bands. In 1945 he led his own group while performing with Dizzy Gillespie on the side. Together they invented bebop. In 1949, Parker made his European debut, giving his last performance several years later. He died a week later on March 12, 1955, in New York City.

The present release features a selection of Lieder by composer Joachim Raff. "Despite the abundance and the high quality of Joachim Raff’s songs, this part of his composition is little known and documented - in contrast to his instrumental works, which are recorded several times. Raff’s songwriting is still hardly a subject of music-historical research. We very much hope and wish that this recording, which consists exclusively of premieres, can interest somebody in Raff’s songs – so that we more often can find them in concerts!"

Two-fer CD reissue combines two 1968 sessions, both featuring Stitt and Patterson, that were recorded on consecutive days (September 23-24, 1968), although one was issued under Patterson's name and the other under Stitt's. The first six songs were issued as the Patterson LP Funk You!, on which Patterson leads a date that also has Sonny Stitt and Charles McPherson on saxes and Pat Martino on guitar. The other players get about as much space as Patterson, and as 1960s jazz with organ goes, this is pretty straight-ahead and boppish, rather than soul-jazz (as so much organ jazz from that decade was).

Ainigma from Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Upper Bavaria played a quite rough and wild kind of progressive rock dominated by Willi Klüter's keyboards. Their only LP, "Diluvium" from 1973, deals with the Flood and is a collectors' item now.
"Prejudice" starts with dreamlike introspective organ atmospheres then rapidly catch the essence of a jam session, with abundant improvised Hammond organs, heavy guitars. "All things are fading" is a moody, depressive but furiously rocking with damaged riffs and sad guitar solos. "Diluvium" is a standard heavy rock epic with melancholic guitar breaks, touching melodies, dynamic, captivating organ melodies…

Recorded live in Berlin at the Total Music Meeting in early November 1996, and released by FMP in 2005, the nearly 77-minute performance ritual Almeda easily stands among Cecil Taylor's finest large ensemble realizations, including Unit Structures (1966), Winged Serpent/Sliding Quadrants (1986), and The Owner of the River Bank, a collaboration with the Italian Instabile Orchestra which occurred in 2004. Almeda's forces are expansive and colorfully unfurled. Here the pianist, poet, and composer was anchored by his regular working unit of bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jackson Krall, with guest cellist Tristan Honsinger.
