This collection features some beautiful and evocative pieces such as the four-part 'Wynchmore Hill Suite' and a vocal version of 'Roads in Between'. Anthony Phillips describes 'The Golden Hour' as "a traditional PPP album of old, a collection of pieces of disparate background hopefully constituting a cohesive whole". This album is indeed a fine collection.

Red Queen to Gryphon Three is only available coupled with the Raindance album on the same disc, but it has stood the test of time as an excellent progressive rock piece. The album centers around a game of chess, with each track around ten minutes in length. The symphonic structure of the movements intricately combine rich textured strings with medieval horns, reminiscent of 16th century England. The keyboards bridge together certain passages with just the right intensity so that they keep from modernizing the album's feel. While some progressive rock can seem over the top or contrived, Gryphon mixes subtlety with diversity to formulate beautiful streamlined music. The use of the bassoon and krumhorn gives this album depth and a profound musical element not found in other bands of the same nature. The tempos and accents express moods that are structured for each piece precisely, such as the brainstorming arrangements in "Opening Move" and the victorious finale heard throughout "Checkmate," the last song on the album. The absence of vocals lets the music carry extra weight, enhancing the vision of the chessboard in the mind's eye.

One of the key albums when talking about psychedelic hard-rock and early proto-metal, originally released in 1969. Featuring the great John Cann (The Attack, Atomic Rooster, Hard Stuff…) on guitar plus Mick Hawksworth (Fuzzy Duck, Alvin Lee) on heavy bass plus the powerful drumming of Ian McLane (Neat Change, Ray Owen’s Moon). Andromeda was formed during the final days of Cann’s previous band The Attack, when he decided to go in a full heavier & proggier musical direction. Recruiting his friend/room mate Mick Hawksworth on bass plus drummer Jack McCulloch (of One In A Million, soon to be replaced by Ian McLane), the power-trio was born. After initial interest from John Peel (Dandelion) and Kit Lambert (Track Records), Cann decided to go with a major label, RCA, who offered him the chance to self-produce their first album. Recorded at Advision Studios, the impressive Andromeda debut was released in 1969, housed in a sleeve designed by John with photos by Gered Mankowitz. But despite receiving excellent reviews and the band playing lots of gigs (some of them billed above bands like Black Sabbath), RCA didn’t know what to do with such a heavy rock band.

Jono El Grande hit his creative straps in '03, releasing his acclaimed album "Fevergreens" on the famous Norwegian label, Rune Grammofon. Sound wise the band finds influences from early Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, King Crimson, Henry Cow, Igor Stravinsky, etc, while adding splices from both pop and film soundtracks. The extensive Orchestration (not so different from early Zappa) whets the imagination with a playful, though sometimes slightly cheesy, outlook on experimental music.

This was the very first Yes bootleg album . It was recorded live in Amsterdam in January 1972 during Yes' classic 1972 period with the classic Yes lineup which at that time had Bill Bruford on drums. The sound quality is fantastic and professionally recorded. The only issue with the album is the editing which has taken place cutting short some of the tracks. This should have ideally been a double or triple album to preserve the integrity of the original concert and track lengths. To the best of my knowledge the rest of this amazing show has never surfaced since. For a true Yes fan this is a must buy. The album is also very rare so catch it if you can !
