Songs Of began with Nathan Russell imagining “a picture of a funeral with a merch table and what the record for sale at my funeral would sound like” and together with producer Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso, The A’s) that original idea grew into these 10 warm and illuminating indie folk songs.

We gathered last spring at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, rehearsed for a day, then recorded this album at the nearby Owl Parlor on March 29 and 30, 2023. Hearing my songs interpreted by these talented musicians, who are also dear friends, brings me immense joy. I hope you enjoy this album as well. As acclaimed indie folk band The Ballroom Thieves wrote and recorded their upcoming album, one central question emerged as the theme: “What if we could all just be a little more tender?” The duo – Calin Peters (vocals, cello, bass) and Martin Earley (vocals, guitar) – started to ponder what they could do to be more self-aware of their mental health and of those around them in a world oversaturated by social media, pop-culture, and digital consumption. The result is a lush, 10-track collection of thoughts on the human experience called Sundust, out April 12. “This group of songs is a self-portrait of our intertwined lives,” shares Peters.
