“Hurts To Be Alone” appears on Jones’ seventh solo studio album Pick Me Up Off The Floor, which will be released in an expanded 30-track digital Deluxe Edition on October 16 featuring 17 at-home performances culled from her much-loved weekly livestreams.

Although Maria Callas considered herself a bel canto and Verdi soprano, through recordings and video documents her name is inextricably linked with that of Puccini. This extraordinary album of Puccini arias was aptly named Puccini Heroines, as it is indeed a collection of portraits of many of the composer’s powerful creations for soprano. By September 1954, Callas had reinvented herself as a slim, elegant diva; the weight loss brought a new slenderness to the voice as well, while the instrument retained flexibility and plushness.

Violetta, the most complex and fully-rounded of Verdi's heroines, was one of the roles that defined Maria Callas as an artist. She performed it more than 60 times between 1951 and 1958, most famously in Luchino Visconti's production at La Scala in 1955/56. It is often said that the role demands a different kind of voice for each act, and, when she made this recording for the Cetra label in 1953, Callas offered youthful, ringing power complemented by coloratura prowess and the capacity for great delicacy. More than 60 years on, her characterisation, in its subtlety and truth, still sets the standard for La traviata.

Chicago-based bluegrass outfit Special Consensus has covered a lot of musical territory in the nearly half a century since banjoist Greg Cahill founded the band in 1975. Two-time GRAMMY nominees and six-time International Bluegrass Music Association winners, the group has amassed an expansive discography of over 20 releases including 2020’s CHICAGO BARN DANCE which highlighted the important role the Windy City played in the early development of bluegrass music.

Symphony Orchestra is a new group from Maximilian Turnbull and Michael Rault. Both Rault and Turnbull are accomplished songwriters, performers and producers in their own right, with Turnbull leading The Badge Époque Ensemble, playing with the group Darlene Shrugg, and once releasing records under the name Slim Twig and Rault having released several psychedelic rock & roll classics under his own name in the past decade. The pair have worked together in various capacities for many years, writing and recording together on U.S. Girls’ In A Poem Unlimited, and contributing to each other's releases, but the debut LP from Symphony Orchestra (due out May 12th on Telephone Explosion) marks their first release as an official entity.

The Middle Eastern Soul of Carlee Records collects the early works of Baronian who's probably best known as a key contributor on John Berberian's Middle Eastern Rock. This set includes his early 50s work with the Nor-Ikes, and his early 70s albums Hye Inspiration and Middle Eastern Soul. This monster is a barrage of middle eastern clarinet, oud, dumbek, kanun, sax, tambourine, wild percussion, and kaval, along with finger cymbals and the occasional vocal from some of his favorite belly dancers. Still performing at 91 with his group Taksim, Souren Baronian is a living legend and he was nice enough to let us raid his tape archive!

Religiously. The Album. is the debut studio album by American country music artist Bailey Zimmerman, released on May 12, 2023, via Warner Music Nashville and Elektra Records. It includes the number one singles "Fall in Love" and "Rock and a Hard Place", which were also featured on his debut EP Leave the Light On. Other tracks released as promotional singles include "Where It Ends", "Get to Gettin' Gone", "Fix'n to Break" and "Religiously". Zimmerman co-wrote eleven of the album's sixteen tracks.

Stylistic diversity and openness to new things characterize the compositional work in Graz, so that the institute for composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has an excellent international reputation. For the retirement of Gerd Kühr, who has helped shape this path over the years with his commitment and his composition class, an album of short piano pieces was created, which the composers of the institute wrote for Gerd Kühr. Gerd Kühr's piano cycle »Praeludium – eight interludes – postlude« appears for the first time. With aphoristic accuracy, the short pieces each throw their spotlight on a special gesture of playing the piano.

Like always, I find myself looking backward at the paths these songs traveled to find themselves shoulder-to-shoulder as “an album.” I wrote most of them in the period where my mom was very sick and immediately after she passed away, but I wouldn’t say they’re grief songs. Mostly they’re about trying to keep the faith—believing life can be new and even better.
