The Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series continues with the debut album from Latvian violinist Roberts Balanas, who counts Sir Elton John among his fans. In this album, we see Roberts’s classical side, yet with some unexpected turns.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed the six cantatas for the Christmas holidays of the year 1734 in order to have one for each holiday performed during the services in the main churches of Leipzig, St. Thomas and St. Nikolai. Both the progressive narrative based on the Gospels of Luke and Matthew and the musical framework give the cantatas the character of an autonomous cycle, which Jordi Savall and his ensembles are facing for the first time.

This first volume of Brahms’ complete songs spans a period of nearly 25 years. A prolific composer of Lieder, Brahms’ adherence to traditional form was accompanied by a modern approach to compositional style. Thematically, most songs explore ideas of love, loneliness and solitude, perfectly exemplified by the Vier Gesänge, Op. 43.

"The other record, Snuggles, is meant to be something you listen to in order to feel better. Puzzle is chaos, Snuggles is calm. The whole project is meant to express that I think there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel we've been through. Keeping ourselves and our loved ones together during it all became the whole point."

Townsend: "So what is The Puzzle?.. well, its not technically my new record, it's more a collaborative, multimedia art project that acts as a stopgap between Empath and the next record, Lightwork (due out in March of next year on Inside Out Records). The Puzzle includes two 'soundtracks' of sorts (the highly orchestrated 'Puzzle' and the very chill 'Snuggles') along with a film, graphic novel, novel, and a huge amount of multimedia. It includes many artists (upwards of 50) that participated via Zoom during the pandemic and the experience gave me a chance to purge and be completely creatively free."

Khalid is set to return, announcing his new EP Scenic Drive. The release will drop on Dec. 3 on RCA Records. For the new release, Khalid will be joined by Alicia Keys, 6LACK, Lucky Daye, Quin, JID, Kiana Ledé, Majid Jordan, Smino, and Ari Lennox. “I’m so grateful to have worked with so many amazing/talented artists on this project! Nils Frahm’s double album ‘Old Friends New Friends’ gathers together 23 solo piano tracks recorded between 2009 and 2021, almost all hitherto unreleased but, for one reason or another, omitted from previous projects. The album offers “an anatomy of all my ways of thinking musically and playing,” Frahm says, adding with a smile, “Maybe I could say it’s an album I worked on for twelve years, and finally I have enough material?”
