Essential: a masterpiece of classic-rock music
It’s unfair to say that Fleetwood Mac had no pop pretensions prior to the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the lineup in 1975. When they were led by Bob Welch they often flirted with pop, even recording the first version of the unabashedly smooth and sappy “Sentimental Lady,” which would later be one of the defining soft rock hits of the late ’70s.

Conductor Reinhard Goebel is one of the most famous personalities of the German classical music world, an "icon of the Early Music" (Süddeutsche Zeitung), an "enlightenment in a sea of mediocrity" (New York Times), a world-renowned mediator of historical performance practice and a never-ending source for repertoire treasures. His Sony Classical recording of the Brandenburg Concertos by Bach with the Berlin Baroque Soloists received worldwide best reviews, an Opus Klassik and is considered a new reference.

It has been a long time, and probably stretching all the way back to the now-distant, legendary concerts led by Carlos Kleiber in 1989 and 1992, since we have enjoyed a New Year's Concert of such quality. With the Latvian Andris Nelsons (known and liked by the Philharmoniker) conducting, this first concert of 2020 had a fluent elegance, a rhythmical verve which was both light and implacable, and a kind of song that allowed the Viennese strings to show off their incredibly silky texture and profound depth.

Peter GABRIEL dug deeper to find the animal within, exploring two very different paths in the process that led to a sort of future primitivism on "Security".

"D.I.Y." is a clever melody with simple lyrics and its one of the highlights of the album. It really sounds like Gabriel is in groove.

This is the first album by Peter Gabriel. It is not extremely progressive. There are omnipresent aggressive rock guitars. “Moribund The Burgermeister” still has some “Lamb lies down on Broadway” influences, especially the miscellaneous original vocal expressions provided by Gabriel himself.

Michael Malarkey returns with his 'Indie-laden Americana' (Alt Press) second album 'Graveracer' since 'Mongrels' (2017). Graveracer tells stories that give us hell and gives us hope. The 1979 album features the single ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy’ and the new deluxe edition features the 2019 remaster (used for The Swan Song Years box set) along with a bonus disc of previously unreleased versions of album tracks and outtakes.

One of the most influent drummers of today’s jazz, Nasheet Waits is part of the evolution of a full, subtle and fiery drum playing, well beyond the traditional codes of accompaniment. He feeds the ow of music with a playing based on a complex use of polyrhythm, a quite peculiar approach of the instrument that paves the way for a freer and more genuine expression, a contagious music revealing a deep attachment to the roots of jazz, to its creators and composers. Nasheet Waits Equality had its auspicious origin with a tour in Italy the spring of 2007.

This album comprises music inspired by the great Ahmad Jamal and his elegant arrangements of popular jazz standards. From 1958-1961 Jamal played with bassist Israel Corsby and drummer Vernel Fournier. This legendary trio was described as playing bright and light swing music with phrasing and harmony from the bebop area and at the same time clear parallel to classical music. Bassist Andreas Dreier has once again brought his trio together. After amazing critics from the first CD «Poinciana» (2014) Andreas Dreier Trio is now ready with the follow-up. Once again the music is arrangements from Jamals piano trio translated into guitar trio.

Delmark Records continues to produce some memorable jazz DVDs and Ethnic Heritage Ensemble's Hot'N'Heavy Live at the Ascension Loft is no exception. From the first few sounds and frames of the video, one dynamic image absorbs the viewer: the group's leader, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar, has more energy in his fingertips than most of us have in our entire bodies.

Miguel Gorodi is a Spanish born trumpeter and composer who is now based in London following his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a hugely versatile musician and I have previously encountered his playing in a sideman context in such large ensembles as the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, Andrew Linham Jazz Orchestra and the Sam Leak Big Band. Currently Gorodi is a member of pianist Barry Green’s sextet, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi’s SEED Ensemble, the London City Big Band, the London Jazz Orchestra and the contemporary trad revivalists the Dixie Ticklers. He has also worked with the vocalists Ian Shaw and Lauren Bush.
