This is the first album of the series by Maestro Patrick Gallois plays masterpieces for flute under the label VIRTUS CLASSICS. Here is a beautiful and charming collection of “morceaux de concours” (examination pieces) of the Paris Conservatory, starting from Faure in 1898 and the beginning of the 20th century.

Domenico Cimarosa’s operas were remarkably successful, being staged and re-staged in opera houses all over Europe. Success in his home town of Naples led o court appointments and royal commissions, including his best-known work Il matrimonio segreto (‘The Secret Marriage’) composed for Austrian emperor Leopold II. Other hits include L’impegno superato (‘The Broken Engagement’), an instant success and soon to become one of the most frequently performed of Cimarosa’s comic works, and Penelope that was produced as far away as London in 1817. The Cantata per Ferdinando IV was, however, written as an act of repentance, Cimarosa having made the mistake of backing the failed republican government in 1799.

It was in the short span of one decade, between the composition of Jeux d’eau (1901) and the Valses nobles et sentimentales (1911), that Maurice Ravel produced most of his piano solo works, which have since become classics of the piano literature. Many among the representative works of this period are covered in the present recording by Emile Naoumoff.

Peruna Jazzmen was also voted one of the World´s 3 best bands within the style at a jazzology election in the USA. Zelmira was the last opera Rossini wrote for Naples, knowing it would also be his calling card to Vienna where he had been assured performances. Keen to reconcile the alleged incompatibility between ‘Italian’ melody and ‘German’ harmony, Rossini employed exciting and daring harmonies and a raft of dazzling orchestral effects in this tragedy in which a daughter saves her father, the king, and her son, from usurpers to the throne. The opera was acclaimed wherever it was heard, and this recording presents the revised and triumphant Paris version.

Year 1979, controversial year, the end of the golden decade of the seventies (musically speaking). It’s not only because I say it, but surprisingly, this is one of Renaissance’s best albums and last. We should have thought that because they gave up their classic and epic 10 minute long songs, it was the end of the band.
