Recognized as a major influential figure in contemporary jazz and the avant-garde, the American composer John Zorn is characterized by his refusal of stereotypes and his radical musical experiments. His chamber music is the focus of the latest recording by the award-winning Molinari Quartet. “It is with great enthusiasm that we dive into the fantastic and fascinating world of John Zorn. His music is powerful, emotional, and colorful”, says Olga Ranzenhofer, first violin. The ensemble has selected four of Zorn’s chamber works for this recording: cat o’ nine tails, the dead man, memento mori and kol nidre.

Following on from his lauded recording of Clavier-Übung III celebrated organist Stephen Farr continues his survey of J.S. Bach's organ works with the four Choral Partitas, BWV 766-768 & 770. This volume also marks the first recording on a substantial and colourful three-manual Bernard Aubertin organ newly installed in a private residence in Fairwap, East Sussex in 2015.

The Ottawa Bach Choir presents works by three of the most important composers of the German Baroque period — Handel (Dixit Dominus with the participation of countertenor Daniel Taylor), along with motets by Schütz and Bach. While the three composers remained faithful to their German roots, the works presented here also feature influences from the Italian Baroque, including the use of drama, expression, intensity, rhythmic fervor, harmonic invention and word painting, as well as polychoral techniques. Founded in 2002 by Lisette Canton, the Ottawa Bach Choir performs music from all historical periods while keeping Bach's choral oeuvre as the focus of its repertoire. Joining some of Canada’s most accomplished artists and top choristers from the National Capital region and beyond, the choir has received national and international recognition.

Passion Music was commissioned for the choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields and continues the fusion of jazz and choral music so successfully blended in Mass in Blue. The structure highlights different points in the Passion story, beginning with a new setting of ‘Greater love has no man’ and including an evocative Stabat Mater, a movement focusing on the seven last words of Christ, and a setting of ‘Were you there when they crucified my Lord?’.

'Otis Taylor's fourteenth album presents a meticulously crafted collection of songs and instrumentals and is only akin to his preceding recordings in that the music again resists easy categorization. Blues and Folk elements are a key part of this, but Taylor's cutting edge approach also draws on Psychedelic Rock, Jazz and Americana to create a hybrid that he calls Trance Blues.

Non qu’il soit tout à fait impertinent, puisqu’on entend bien ici au moins un air traditionnel arménien (Erzeroumi Shoror) et que le cœur se fend plus d’une fois aux sanglots et souffles gutturaux des duduk (hautbois) et chevi (flûte). Mais une lecture folklorique ne rendrait pas justice à l’imbrication étroite de jazz, de groove (Wayne the saint) et d’enluminures arméniennes, à l’incroyable cohésion du quintet mené par Alexis Avakian (avec quelques inter­ventions de Miqayel Voskanyan au chant et au târ) et à la poésie qu’il ­déploie à cœur ouvert.
