Jazz | Label: ECM Records

The Scandinavian project Arcanum brings together four artists all well-known to followers of directions in music at ECM: Arve Henriksen, Trygve Seim, Anders Jormin and Markku Ounaskari. They've played together in many permutations over the years, but this is their first album as a quartet. Compositions by Anders Jormin and Trygve Seim, the Finnish traditional "Armon Lapset" (Children of Mercy), and Jormin's arrangement of Ornette Coleman's "What Reason Could I Give" are slotted into a programme of graceful collective improvisations distinguished by lyrical imagination, reflective soloing and sensitive group interaction. Arcanum, recorded at Village Recording Studio, Copenhagen, and mixed in Munich in January 2025, was produced by Manfred Eicher.

Yuja Wang here gives characteristically dynamic and expressive performances of Shostakovich's contrasting 'Piano Concertos', written 24 years apart, with the BSO's principal trumpet Thomas Rolfs playing the obbligato trumpet part in the first. The new album also features 6 solo piano pieces from Shostakovich's '24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 & Op. 34'.

Hendrix had gone so long between albums, seemingly adrift stylistically at various times, that there's no telling exactly what direction he was finally going to end up working toward. This is a superb album, and a worthy if very different, earthier successor to Electric Ladyland's psychedelic excursions - the later tracks, ironically enough, cut at that album's long promised and long-delayed studio namesake - and also show him working in some genuinely new directions. For starters, Hendrix's voice emerges here as a genuinely powerful instrument in its own right - his voice was never as exposed in the mix of his songs as it is here; partly this is because Hendrix and engineer Eddie Kramer never finished embellishing the songs, or completed the final mixes…

This disc contains a selection of beautiful and individual music for violin and harpsichord by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, performed by two of the most distinguished musicians of Baroque music historical informed practice.Ryo Terakado: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, J.S. Bach's second son, was, in my opinion, the one among his talented siblings who most deeply respected his father and remained faithful to his teachings while also striving to create music that reflected the changing times. Throughout his life, he composed chamber music, and among his Klavier Trios, there are sixteen pieces that explicitly designate a keyboard and a single melodic instrument. Among these, his crowning achievement in this genre–and a breakthrough work–is found in the four sonatas for violin and clavier composed in 1763(Wq. 75-Wq. 78).In these sonatas, particularly in the slow movements, the contrast between the keyboard and violin idioms deepens the musical expression.

"The Brahms project with the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique in 2007 was a thrilling undertaking - a thorough reappraisal of Brahms's sound world, both in terms of period instruments and a study of the surviving evidence of performance practice. So why then a second recording 18 years later? First, because these symphonies are evergreen - miracles at the time of their inception and super-challenging every time one encounters them. Second, because I sensed a need and a personal challenge to build on that seminal earlier experience and to extend its findings and interpretations to/in working with a modern instrument orchestra - especially such a distinguished, flexible and immensely accomplished one as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - in search of a fresh synthesis of styles and approaches.

The second ECM album from this Polish-Swedish-British edition of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet follows the critically-heralded Matka Joanna. As Jazz Journal wrote, 'Trumpeter Stanko's vibrant breadth of tone and poetic feeling for cross-rhythmic drama are second to none.' Leosia marks a further progression, incorporating six first-rate Stanko compositions in his brooding 'Slavic' style, darker than the darkest Miles (and incorporating a tribute to Lautréamont, literature's Count of Darkness), as well as bracing and exploratory duo and trio improvisations, and solos of the higherst calibre by all concerned. The group has an unusual claim on idiomatic completeness; it seems to summarize, in highly original manner, many of the important developments of jazz of the last 30 years…

In 1972 black people rarely featured in the country’s white-owned official newspapers, unless, perhaps, they were a dead “terrorist”. However, Dr Footswitch’s performance prompted The Rhodesia Herald to print the picture of their guitar player, Manu Kambani, on the front page along with the screaming sentence “Jimi Hendrix is dead but Manu is alive”. With his ability to mimic the mesmerising antics of Jimi Hendrix Manu had impressed everybody and the editor of the paper couldn’t resist printing the story. Heavy criticism from conservative whites followed, accusing the Herald of “lowering the standards.” But the coverage turned Manu into an emblematic figure in Harare, one of Salisbury’s oldest townships, and would influence many youngsters to form their own musical groups. Those bands began fusing Rock music, Congolese Rumba, South African Mbaqanga, soul and traditional beats into an underground music movement that would shape the future of Zimbabwean sound and challenge the colonial establishment.

Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho releases the first of two upcoming albums, Ravel: The Complete Solo Piano Works, on which he lays his focus on the music of Ravel. Having loved the French composer since childhood and immersed himself in him while studying at the Paris Conservatoire, Cho has chosen to mark the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth in 2025 by recording his complete solo piano music and the two piano concertos. The pianist has always felt a close connection with the French piano literature and found himself fully discussing the challenges of the solo works, pointing to the composer’s orchestral sound and meticulous attention to detail. “Ravel really knew what he wanted, so I try to follow his specific markings,” he says. His insightful performance of Ravel’s works underlines Cho’s statue as one of today’s most elegant and accomplished pianists.

An enigmatic figure, Jean Adam Guilain has left posterity a collection of suites imbued with grave majesty and subtle melancholy. Rarely played nowadays, the four suites that have escaped the hazards of time resonate for the first time on the Great Organs of the Chapelle Royale de Versailles. Guilain's solemn music is interwoven here with the gentle melodies of Jacques Morel, forming a sumptuous tableau in which organ, viol and harpsichord complement each other harmoniously. Thomas Ospital and the Ensemble Saint-Honore combine their talents to perform these little-known works with great finesse.

Longtime Morcheeba fans that found their sunshine bright album The Antidote a complete disappointment couldn't ask for a better follow-up than Dive Deep. Making that other unloved effort seem like a mislabeled side project, Dive Deep finds multi-instrumentalists the Godfrey brothers returning to the murky, moody kind of downtempo and trip-hop of their early days, just without original vocalist Skye Edwards, or for that matter, Antidote's vocalist Daisy Martey. Instead, they go about it Zero 7 style, utilizing a series of guest vocalists including smooth rapper Cool Calm Pete, alternative singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl, and most surprisingly, pop/rock veteran Judie Tzuke, who brings a welcome, folk-tinged sound that serves to connect the dots here between soft rock and Portishead. Tzuke's "Enjoy the Ride" and "Blue Chair" are the mellow highlights to curl up with, while Dybdahl's trilogy of songs – "Riverbed," "Sleep on It Tonight," and "Washed Away" – finds his poetic musings on all things melancholy perfectly packaged in Morcheeba's lazy sway.

The set that made Cray a pop star, despite its enduring blues base. Cray's smoldering stance on "Smoking Gun" and "Right Next Door" rendered him the first sex symbol to emerge from the blues field in decades, but it was his innovative expansion of the genre itself that makes this album a genuine 1980s classic. "Nothing but a Woman" boasts an irresistible groove pushed by the Memphis Horns and some metaphorically inspired lyrics, while "I Wonder" and "Guess I Showed Her" sizzle with sensuality.
