No matter how you look at it, there is no one who only thinks of the West Coast as "white people," "blue California skies," "bright and refreshing," and "smooth jazz." California has always been the holy land of black music, and has also given birth to an incredible number of African-American jazz musicians. Nat King Cole, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Charles Mingus, Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy, Les McCann, Roy Ayers… The protagonist of this album, tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington, is also one of those who inherited the "bloodline of LA black musicians." Currently, he plays traditional jazz with the prestigious Gerald Wilson Orchestra, while exploring more contemporary sound creation with his own group, "The Next Step."
