Best known as one-half of the groundbreaking synth pop duo Eurythmics, Dave Stewart was also a highly successful producer and, on occasion, a solo artist. David A. Stewart (as he also sometimes was credited on record) was born September 9, 1952 in Sunderland, England; the product of an upper-middle class family, he enjoyed his first taste of musical success during the early '70s while fronting the band Longdancer. The group seemed poised for big things after signing to Elton John's Rocket Records, but they quickly fizzled out; Stewart soon resurfaced in a variety of short-lived groups, and eventually began writing songs with friend Peet Coombes. In the late '70s he was also introduced to an aspiring singer named Annie Lennox; the two became lovers, and with Coombes they formed a group dubbed the Tourists, issuing a trio of new wave-influenced LPs between 1979 and 1980.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)When the Tourists came to a halt in late 1980, Stewart and Lennox's romance ended as well; they agreed to continue their musical partnership, however, rechristening themselves Eurythmics. Their soulful synth pop sound was created solely via Stewart's technological mastery, capped off by Lennox's powerful vocals; after the title track of 1983's Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) became an international smash, the Eurythmics rose to become one of the '80s most successful and innovative artists, scoring such major hits as 1984's "Here Comes the Rain Again," 1985's "Would I Lie to You?," and 1986's "Missionary Man." In 1985, Stewart also scored his first outside success as a producer, working on Aretha Franklin's comeback album Who's Zoomin' Who; that same year, he also helmed Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' hit Southern Accents. In the years to follow, he went on to produce music for Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, and the Neville Brothers.
We Too Are OneBy the end of the '80s, Eurythmics' popularity was on the decline, and after 1989's We Too Are One failed to recapture the magic of their earlier work, they essentially disbanded, with only a hits compilation and a live LP to follow. Stewart, who in 1987 had married Bananarama/Shakespear's Sister vocalist Siobhan Fahey, initially turned to soundtrack work, scoring the Dutch film Lily Was Here in 1989; a year later, he put together a new band, the Spiritual Cowboys, with ex-Pretenders drummer Martin Chambers. Sporting a more atmospheric, guitar-driven sound than his previous work, the Spiritual Cowboys issued two albums, a 1990 self-titled effort and 1991's Honest, neither of which caught on with audiences. Stewart then spent the next several years in relative silence, accepting a few production jobs but otherwise staying out of the limelight. In 1995, he finally issued his proper solo debut, Greetings from the Gutter.
Cookie's FortuneIn 1997, Stewart co-produced the album Destination Anywhere for Jon Bon Jovi. He emerged as an artist again in 1999; this time as a film composer scoring director Robert Altman's film Cookie's Fortune in 1999. In November 2002, he worked with former South African president Nelson Mandela. Stewart came up with the idea of turning Mandela's prison number into a telephone number. He wrote and recorded songs with Paul McCartney, Bono, and the Edge (among others) that could only be heard if you dialed this number; the cost of the call was in fact a donation in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the newly independent but beleaguered nation. Along with an ad agency, Stewart organized the entire campaign. In 2004, he collaborated with Jagger on the score for a remake of the film Alfie, and in 2007 scored Ted Demme's film The Ref. In March 2007, Stewart unveiled an initiative called "Greenpeace Works," which he labeled a "think tank" to dream up ways celebrities and Greenpeace could work together on green issues. For the project, he issued The Dave Stewart Songbook, a large coffee table-size book full of stories and photographs. It was accompanied by a newly recorded CD of 21 songs that been co-written or co-produced by him. Also included was the song "American Prayer," written with Bono. In 2008, Stewart shot a video for the tune as support for Barack Obama's presidential bid.
In Your DreamsIn 2011, he completed work on his musical, Ghost, which opened in England in March; he also finished work on Stevie Nicks' In Your Dreams album, which was co-produced by Glen Ballard and released in May. Simultaneously, he also completed his first album of new material in 13 years in Nashville, with help from Martina McBride, Joss Stone, Colbie Caillat, and the Secret Sisters. Entitled The Blackbird Diaries, the set was recorded at McBride's husband John's Blackbird Studios and issued in late May. Stewart also helmed the sessions and co-wrote the songs for Stone's LP1, which was released in the summer of 2011. That same year, both Stewart and Stone joined SuperHeavy, a supergroup that also featured Mick Jagger, Damian Marley, and A.R. Rahman. A self-titled SuperHeavy album arrived in the fall of 2011, and then Stewart returned to Blackbird Studios, recording and releasing his solo effort The Ringmaster General in 2012. A year later, Stewart released Lucky Numbers, another solo album laden with guest stars, this time including Martina McBride and Karen Elson. Stewart published his memoir, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This: A Life in Music, in February 2016 and then turned his attention to The Nashville Sessions. A series of collaborations with superstars and emerging artists, the first volume of the project – entitled The Nashville Sessions: The Duets, Vol. 1 – arrived in October 2017.Jason Ankeny, Allmusic.com

Following two anemic-selling albums with his post-Eurythmics outfit, the Spiritual Cowboys, Dave Stewart released his proper solo debut in Greetings From the Gutter. It curtails the more rock-leaning aspects of the prior albums for a funkier, dance approach with Parliament/Funkadelic alumni Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Jerome "Big Foot" Brailey backing Stewart. The sultry, almost campy, "Heart of Stone" is a funky, disco-styled song with infectious backing vocals performed by a female quartet including Lady Miss Kier, Nona Hendryx, and Siobahn Fahey. "Chelsea Lovers" is a deliciously bittersweet, glam ballad (with a nod to Bowie in the lyrics). "Jealous" is stripped down and soulful and "St. Valentine's Day" opens like a Tom Waits song before giving way to a Beatlesque, psychedelic melody. Laurie Anderson adds violin and vocals to the eerie, spacy "Kinky Sweetheart," featuring a wicked guitar solo from Stewart. "Damien Save Me" has a monstrous, hypnotic groove, a smoking sax solo from Lenny Pickett, and some Hendrix-like guitar. The playing is tight, the vibe is loose, and Greetings From the Gutter is some of Stewart's warmest, most compelling work.Review by Tom Demalon, Allmusic.com

With 1998's "Slyfi", Dave's fourth solo release, he finally achieves complete musical success that eluded him on his three previous outings. Here, Dave sounds up to date and even joyous. Great songs like "Happy To Be Here", "Leaving This Earth", "Even The Bad Times (Were Good Times)" and "AWOL" make this release worth owning. All 10 tracks fit together very nicely with minimal filler or waste. Dave tones down "Greetings From The Gutter"'s heavy r&b influence and blends it with electronica here for nice effect. I find it interesting that one year before reuniting with Annie Lennox for "Peace" that Dave Stewart was making some really great music that was absent from "Peace", which is perhaps why "Peace" didn't sell well in America among other things. If you are a fan of Dave's music or the Eurythmics, "Slyfi" is definitely worth owning.Review by Jason Stein

Though not recording himself, Dave Stewart's been busy for the past 13 years as a producer and songwriter. In 2011 alone he produced albums by Joss Stone and Stevie Nicks. The Blackbird Diaries is his first album of his own material since 1998. It's titled for the Blackbird Studio in Nashville, where the set was recorded; it's owned by Martina and John McBride. Stewart cut and produced 15 songs in five days with John McBride behind the board and longtime collaborator Mike Bradford co-producing. Much was recorded live in the studio and the sound of the dozen songs that made the album reflects that; its energetic crackle and rawness weren't mixed out. Given the caliber of the players, most of whom are regulars on the cookie-cutter records pumped out of Nashville these days, that's saying plenty. Pedal steel boss Dan Dugmore, Neil Young's touring drummer Chad Cromwell, bassist Michael Rhodes, guitarist Tom Bukovac, and keyboardist Mike Rojas probably had the time of their lives making a record that sounds this loose. The Blackbird Diaries doesn't resemble anything Stewart's released previously. These songs are rooted in basic rock & roll, country, blues, and some modern approximation of all of them simultaneously. Stewart claims the songs were written quickly, and in places, that shows. "The Gypsy Girl and Me" has so much of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" in it that Dylan should get a co-write. That's the extent of the bad news, however. The roots rock in "So Long Ago" recalls the guitar vibe of the Rolling Stones, while the balladry of "All Messed Up," a duet with Martina McBride, marries pop and country so seamlessly that it's one of the most successful ballads either has ever cut – Dugmore's steel is like a third voice, swooning and swooping through the mix. "Magic in the Blues" channels the country rockabilly of Johnny Cash reverently, but that's not a bad thing. "Cheaper Than Free" is an Everly Brothers-style bare-bones ballad sung in duet with Nicks, and it's as good – or better – than anything on her most recent recording. "One Way Ticket to the Moon," with the Secret Sisters, is a nuevo Spanish-flavored number, complete with moody marimbas. It's atmospheric and narcotic, with a noir-ish tinge. "The Well" is an old-school country number that channels Stonewall Jackson, but could have been sung by Nick Cave. The album closes with the same bombastic, celebratory Stones-ish roots rock it opened with in the hilarious "Can't Get You Out of My Head." The Blackbird Diaries isn't for everyone: it's mainstream but not sterile; it celebrates roots music without overly indulging it or neglecting pop; in short, it's catchy as hell and better than any Stewart solo project to date.Review by Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

Dave Stewart is a gifted musical collaborator, but he has the ego of a major star, which means he insists on taking the spotlight whether it's a good idea or not. He's also ambitious and full of ideas, which is good when he's working with someone who can use a push in the right direction, but if Stewart has no one around to give him bearings, he has a tendency to bite off more than he can chew stylistically, which is how he can go from the sublime pop perfection of his work in the Eurythmics to the ridiculousness of his ill-fated supergroup SuperHeavy. The Ringmaster General is a sequel of sorts to Stewart's 2011 solo album The Blackbird Diaries; like the earlier album, this one was written and recorded during a five-day blowout at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, with Stewart leading a crack band of studio cats and bringing in some talented acquaintances to do guest vocals (among them Alison Krauss, Jessie Baylin, and his SuperHeavy partner Joss Stone). The results reveal Stewart's strengths and weaknesses in equal measure; he has a knack for writing a good pop tune, he knows how to get musicians to deliver the goods in the studio, and he's a strong guitar player. However, as a lead vocalist he's average at best, his idea of a good arrangement usually leans to the bombastic, and while this album is supposed to celebrate his love of roots music, his country and R&B leanings here invariably sound forced. On several tunes, Stewart seems to think the best way to make a song sound soulful is to let the backing vocalists get as happy as they want, which makes the opener, "I Got Love," and the closer, "A New Song for Nashville," sound as if they were recorded at a suburban blues bar with several drunk women in the audience intrusively yelling into the mike. Stewart also isn't much of a lyricist, and most of these songs are pockmarked with cliches and clumsy wordplay that find Stewart trying to celebrate his cool factor and status as a world-class Lothario. For an album that came together in less than a week, The Ringmaster General sounds assured, professional, and polished, all without squeezing the life out of the performances, and the picking from Stewart and his band is splendid throughout. But while Stewart the producer and bandleader earned his paycheck on The Ringmaster General, they should have told Stewart the songwriter and lead singer that he needed to finish his homework before trundling this material into the studio, since the latter guy's work is the anchor that sinks this particular session.Review by Mark Deming, Allmusic.com

Dave Stewart never seems settled solo so the abundance of guest stars on Lucky Numbers, his 2013 LP and eighth solo venture, makes perfect sense. Collaboration is his lifeblood. He thrived as a producer in the late '80s and '90s and even now, in the new millennium, he'll run at the chance to form a new consortium, as he did in 2011 when he urged Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and A.R. Rahman to become SuperHeavy. Lucky Numbers, his solo album that appeared two years later, doesn't have the same level of star power but it does make room for Stewart's Nashville pals, with Martina McBride providing the vocals on the single "Every Single Night" – an excellent adult contemporary tune that will not be played on any radio station anywhere in 2013 – and Karen Elson, best known as Jack White's ex, popping up on "Nashville Snow." This suggests that it might be a country album, either in the commercial or Americana sense of the word, but it's not, not at all. Lucky Numbers, like all of Stewart's solo albums, funnels his absolutely bizarre ideas through a system that flattens out all their eccentricities. At its core, Lucky Numbers remains a singularly strange record – there are hints of roots music, either in contemplative country or Cajun-spiked rockers ("One Step Too Far"), or rewrites of "Manic Depression" ("Why Can't We Be Friends") – but the professional producer within Stewart flattens all of his quirks so the album is slick, sweet, and kind of dull.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic.com
