Daniel Janke is a Canadian composer, jazz pianist, and media artist. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Ontario, Canada.

The backbones of the present recording are Schubert's two late violin-piano compositions: the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasia in C major, both commissioned by virtuoso Czech violinist Josef Slavík.

Although she became famous for "Queen of the House," her response to Roger Miller's "King of the Road," Jody Miller pioneered a fusion of folk, country, and pop that set the stage for the folky country-pop of the '70s. Raised in Oklahoma, she was born Myrna Joy Miller and, inspired by the music of Joan Baez, learned to play guitar at the age of 14. Soon after, Miller joined a folk trio and began performing at a local coffeehouse. Lou Gottlieb, a member of folk group the Limelighters, heard her sing and was impressed enough to offer to help her get a recording contract, provided she move to Los Angeles. Miller initially declined, as she had recently married, but eventually she and her husband went to California to test the waters. A friend of the family arranged an audition with Capitol Records, which signed Miller while suggesting that she change her name from Myrna to the folkier "Jody."

McBride proves himself a true master of hooklines, from the vocal lines to the riffs and adorning licks, everything is utterly catchy and (even the guitar lines!) truly singable.

Tallinn Chamber Orchestra’s album “Pēteris Vasks”. The publication includes two string concertos by Latvian-born composer Pēteris Vasks, the first of which is “Concerto No. 2 “Klātbūtne” for Cello and String Orchestra” – a three-part concerto for cello and string orchestra. Marko Ylönen will perform as a cello soloist on the recording. The second work on the album is the four-part “Concerto for Viola and String Orchestra” that features viola player Lilli Maijala as soloist. The orchestra is conducted by Juha Kangas.

British Sea Power was founded in Reading in 2000. After 20 years and seven albums, they changed their name to Sea Power in 2021, which they justified as follows: "Recently, a certain kind of nationalism has been on the rise in this world - an isolationist, antagonistic nationalism with which we don't want to be confused. It has become apparent that the name British Sea Power can be misunderstood, especially if you don't know the band or their recordings. We always wanted to be an internationalist band, but maybe having a specific nation-state in our name wasn't the smartest way to demonstrate that."

Under Director Richard K. Pugsley, the US-based choir Gloriæ Dei Cantores has gained a reputation for its impeccable vocal blend as well as bold programming, including its recent championing of the music of Jewish composer Samuel Adler. Adler and his family escaped Nazi Germany in 1939, settling in the United States, where he went on to compose more than 400 works. European and American influences unite in his choral music, most notably in Choral Trilogy, an ambitious work for choir and organ that nods to both Herbert Howells and Adler’s teacher Aaron Copland. In “Psalm 23”, Adler sets Hebrew and English texts, acknowledging both his heritage and adopted home in music of mesmerising beauty. To Speak to Our Time, commissioned for the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, brings the plight of refugees across the world into powerful focus.

Smetana was a musician of great talent who, in self-imposed exile from his native Bohemia, taught music and composition in Göteberg, Sweden. Like other Bohemian artists and musicians in the mid of the 19th century, Smetana longed for the day when his native land would be free from the oppression of its Austrian masters. After the Austro-Hungarian Empire granted political sovereignty to Bohemia, Smetana and other Czech composers could finally return to their home- land to create a national cultural identity for the self-governing provinces.

Bassoonist Lola Descours, prize-winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky competition in 2019, performs an all-Russian programme of music transcribed for bassoon and piano. A passionate advocate for the bassoon and its often underestimated capacity for colour and expression, Lola Descours performs repertoire of great variety, including Glinka, considered to be the first great Russian composer, as well as lyrical Tchaikovsky, romantic Rachmaninov, powerful Scriabin and sardonic Shostakovich.

Ed Ames' flirtations with country music with and without the Ames Brothers make his 1972 tribute to Jim Reeves a little less surprising than it might seem at a glance. Reeves was the archetypal pop-sounding country artist, and Chet Atkins says that Reeves was a great admirer of Ames' voice, so the project makes a kind of sense after all. No one would mistake Ames, with his prim enunciation, for a country singer, but producer Joe Reisman wisely approached the album from a country-pop rather than easy listening direction. The subdued pedal steel and sparse accompaniment prevent the end product from seeming schmaltzy or corny, both of which are ever-present dangers when non-country artists cut country records. The slightly modernized reading of "Distant Drums" and Ames' weary recitation on "The Blizzard" are two highlights on this thoroughly respectable tribute. ~ Greg Adams
