Armando Trovajoli (also Trovaioli, 2 September 1917 – 28 February 2013) was an Italian film composer and pianist with over 300 credits as composer and/or conductor, many of them jazz scores for exploitation films of the Commedia all'italiana genre.

I have been interested in Liszt’s transcriptions of his own songs for several years, and it is with great enthusiasm that I share this recording with a worldwide audience. All of the tracks on this album are Liszt’s transcriptions of his own vocal works: both volumes of Buch der Lieder, the second version of Die Loreley, and three short transcriptions of choral works by Liszt.

Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s influence as composer and teacher was profound in Russia and beyond, yet his chamber music has been overshadowed by his operas and orchestral works. The unfinished Piano Trio in C minor was completed by his son-in-law Maximilian Steinberg to reveal a substantial work of considerable depth. César Cui’s charming and lyrical Farniente is an arrangement from a piano original, while Borodin’s Piano Trio in D major is reminiscent of Mendelssohn in its joyous agility and nostalgic beauty.

Emmanuel Despax returns to Signum with a disc of JS Bach transcriptions. The title quotes Victor Hugo’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ (“Breathe, Hope”), brought to Despax’s mind following the news of the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral, where he had attended many concerts of Bach’s music as a child. Despax describes Bach’s music as being “of such clarity, coherence and expressive power, that it is able to transcend its original medium, and to some extent, style.

Lakeshore Records has released the soundtrack to The United States vs Billie Holiday, which features a gorgeously emotive orchestrated score by Emmy Award-winning composer Kris Bowers that underlies the dramatic tension of the film’s complex and unvarnished look at the irrepressible Billie Holiday and her struggle against the race-based harassment of the federal government.

The album establishes Feng as the first Chinese violinist to have recorded all six of Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas, regarded to be the pinnacle of the solo violin repertoire. It is also Feng’s third solo release after Solo and Solo 2. Feng says of the album: “Bach’s solo works have always been a part of my musical life … and I started recording these masterworks… to pay my tribute to the greatest musician of all time.”
