When Håkon Storm and Jan Wiese first met and played together in the spring of 2017, they uncovered the potential for a particular kind of music – a unique and interesting kind of jazz.

18th-century Italian violinists trained in the tradition of Arcangelo Corelli, spreading his elegant, expressive and virtuosic style on their travels throughout Europe. Giovanni Mossi’s sonatas retain Corelli’s dramatic contrasts and structure, while Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli also incorporates features found in music by Vivaldi. Both composers’ works combine formal elegance with wild abandon, lyrical charm and virtuosity alongside plenty of room for improvisation from acclaimed soloist Augusta McKay Lodge.

Known for its daring and youthful performances, the ensemble Les Barocudas makes its ATMA Classique recording debut with La Peste, a musical journey that explores the theme of the plague. The members of the Montreal-based trio, Marie Nadeau-Tremblay (violin), Ryan Gallagher (viola da gamba), and Nathan Mondry (harpsichord), have compiled a program in which each piece corresponds with an episode or aspect of this 17th century pandemic.

“Change is inevitable if you’re lucky,” says guitarist / vocalist Alex Edkins while talking about Atlas Vending, the fourth full-length album by Toronto’s Metz. “Our goal is to remain in flux, to grow in a natural and gradual way. We’ve always been wary to not overthink or intellectualize the music we love but also not satisfied until we’ve accomplished something that pushes us forward.” The music made by Edkins and his compatriots Hayden Menzies (drums) and Chris Slorach (bass) has always been a little difficult to pin down.

Francesco Fournier Facio was born in Rome. He have studies composition with Riccardo Panfli and has attended masterclasses led by composers Fabio Vacchi and Luca Lombardi. In June 2013 the Accademia Filarmonica Romana commissioned him a new piece for soprano and ensemble to be performed at its Music Festival Il Bosco di Eros, where it was world-premiered by the Imago Sonora Ensemble. In the same year he attended Luis Bacalov's composition for film course at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena; as well as a composition masterclass at the Université de Montréal taught by Fabio Vacchi and Jean-Jacques Nattiez. Fournier also plays keyboards in two rock bands. Between 2011 and 2013 he wrote 7 nocturnes and 7 preludes, a selection of which is presented in this album.

Formed in Minneapolis in 1979, The Replacements initially started out as a punk rock band but grew to be one of the pioneers of alternative rock. Pleased To Meet Me is the onlyalbum from the band recorded as a trio after guitarist Bob Stinson's exit after the release of their fourth studio album Tim, and before the addition of guitarist Bob 'Slim' Dunlap.

Three works by Polish composers of great stature: the music of Karol Szymanowski is now very well known; he was responsible for the first real flowering of Polish music after Chopin, developing from the Romantic to expressionism to modernism. His Op. 9 violin sonata is his earliest chamber composition, written when he was 22 and found immediate success with audiences of not all of the critics at the time. Andrzej Panufnik, who later became a British citizen, is also an early work and as his Op. 1 (he did not give opus numbers to any other work) symbolizes the beginning of his great career. Elements of modernism, Romanticism and jazz inspire this superb work. It is heard here in the composers revised version from 1977. For Grazyna Bacewicz, chamber music played a very important role alongside concert works; she summed up the 200 years from Chopin to Rachmaninoff as a great virtuoso composer and performer on both violin and piano. The fourth piano sonata is generally considered her greatest described by one critic as contemporary Brahms.
