There are few musicians in jazz who can make you feel that essentially all is right in the world. Getting the balance just right has always been Ibrahim’s great strength, drawing from a source but keeping it fresh. A modern master… his graceful playing leans on equal measures of force and restraint, of dense clusters and open space. Mr. Ibrahim’s music is dotted by satisfying, sometimes stunning, passages of repose.

As one of the key players of the London jazz scene, Theon Cross has been dominating airwaves and stages recently. He's part of a thriving family network of young London-based musicians who have regularly supported one another in stretching and re-shaping the boundaries of the jazz genre. Additional side-projects include performing and recording with individuals such as Makaya Mcraven, Sons of Kemet, and featuring on Gilles Peterson’s compilation album We Out Here. Within all this noise, Cross has also been leading his own trio project with Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd. The band released an EP back in 2015 and are now following up with a full studio album, ‘Fyah’.

Hot on the heels of Impulse’s recently unearthed Coltrane number one hit album comes another beauty from Jazz’s ‘Holy Trinity’. This is a previously unreleased, precious lost treasure from Monk’s most critically acclaimed line-up; Charlie Rouse on saxophone, John Ore on double bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The music was recorded live in Copenhagen in 1963 at the peak of Monk’s career. A year later he was to feature on the cover of TIME magazine, one of only for 4 Jazz artists ever to do so.

O.C. Smith at Home was the finest showcase for the singer's warm, baritone vocals. Produced by Jerry Fuller, the LP's songs revolved around home and heart. The LP cover featured the singer walking with a little boy. The second single, the rousing, dynamic "Daddy's Little Man," hit Billboard's charts in fall 1969. Its flip side was the driving, horn-accented soap opera-themed "If I Leave You Now." The lushly orchestrated "The Learning Tree" was the opening title theme of the family drama movie directed by Gordon Parks. "Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife" cracked the R&B Top 25. All of this musical magic was wrapped up in the great arrangements of H.B. Barnum. Some of the LP tracks appeared on his O.C. Smith's Greatest Hits.

An irreverent songwriter, Lorene Mann achieved minor success as a Nashville-based country artist in the mid-‘60s. Her first success came as a duet partner with Justin Tubb and Archie Campbell, but when she struck out on her own she provided country fans with an oft not heard take on dating and love. Her "Don't Put Your Hands on Me" was a call to arms for any woman ever hit on in a bar by a drunken slob. Even more controversial was her song "Hide My Sin," in which she tells the sad tale of a woman who decides to terminate her pregnancy while backup singers chime in by spelling out ABORTION. After those minor hits, though, Mann soon faded from the scene. Perhaps her songs were just too far ahead of their time. In fact, they're still ahead of their time in conservative Nashville.
