Tears of Joy is the Italian guitar hero's ninth and most indulgent album to date. Recorded over a residency with hailed engineer Martin Levan at Red Kite Studios in the seclusion of deepest Carmarthenshire, Forcione was joined by a host of world class musicians, including the Antonio Forcione Quartet. Tears of Joy truly marks the affirmation of a great musical visionary's compositions and arrangements. Fans are used to seeing Metallica rock massive stadiums, but last night (Sept. 27), the metal legends played an intimate club gig at New York’s Webster Hall for about 1,500 lucky fans, and we were fortunate to among those in attendance. The late multi-reed player/composer Eric Dolphy, one of the most pivotal figures in jazz, was a fiercely lyrical, imaginative musician at the forefront of the changes the music underwent in the 1960s. Dolphy, unlike some of his contemporaries, never totally abandoned the bebop approach of soloing over chord changes, but instead took his solos to fresh, expressive heights.

The follow-up album to Outward Bound, Eric Dolphy's second effort for the Prestige/New Jazz label (and later remastered by Rudy Van Gelder) was equally praised and vilified for many reasons. At a time when the "anti-jazz" tag was being tossed around, Dolphy's nonlinear, harshly harmonic music gave some critics grist for the grinding mill. A second or third listen to Dolphy's music reveals an unrepentant shadowy side, but also depth and purpose that were unprecedented and remain singularly unique.

French drummer Manu Katche always seemed something of an odd man at ECM Records on his four solo discs—warm, groove-centric, gregarious sets competing with the Nordic cool of Tord Gustavsen, or the thoughtful melancholy of trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and pianist Marcin Wasilewski. And—like few artists in the ECM stable—he crossed successfully into the rock world via work with Peter Gabriel, Sting, Robbie Robertson and many more.
