While running away from the police, playboy racketeer Jack 'Lucky' Wilson receives a non-life threatening bullet wound. Lucky manages to escape and drives as far as he can before passing out. Lucky is found by farmer Henry Miller, who believes Lucky is an innocent man who was randomly shot by gangsters. Lucky contacts his partner, Tony Berrelli, who sends the mob payrolled doctor to check on Lucky's condition.

The two drivers Giovanni and Gaetano are friends. Gaetano, bold and ruthless, thrives in the black market, while Giovanni, who is a naive and fundamentally honest worker from the North of Italy, cannot get any profit and his wife, an energetic and talkative Roman woman, can't help blaming him for his poor business skills. Returning from a trip to Naples, he brings home a little hungry orphan, Nello. At first Giovanni's wife doesn't want the boy, but then she begins to like him.

In a series of tableaux of Life in Denmark, he carries absurdism to a happy extreme. To act out his minuscule non-dramas, he uses a motley crew of professional actors like Ghita Nørby and Claus Nissen, writer Dan Turéll plus a snake charmer, a bicycle racer and a circus queen.
