It was distinctly ironic: at the very zenith of America's postwar space-age love affair with TV, 3-D, and rock & roll (and other disposable cultural ephemera), a grassroots movement set out to recapture the country's lost musical heritage. These curious minds not only found it in a wealth of seemingly forgotten protest songs, spiritual blues, and country laments, but also forged new songs in its image. That this crusade sprang from lower Manhattan's Washington Square and the doorstep of New York University made the paradox all the sweeter. Ted Myers, the producer of this triple-disc anthology, grew up just blocks from the epicenter of that folk-quake, and his generous sense of place and time permeates this rich collection. Generally misunderstood and historically pigeonholed, the era finally gets its due, chronicled here by 72 tracks that extend far beyond the roots-conscious work of Woody Guthrie, the Weavers, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Pete Seeger on one hand, and the more popular material by the Kingston Trio, Limeliters, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan on the other. Culturally, the Folk movement was the alt-rock of its day–if eminently more conscious of history and politically committed.

Depressive black metallers Ghost Bath have emerged from beyond the veil with their new album, Rose Thorn Necklace, through long-time partner Nuclear Blast. Free from the Moonlover-Starmourner-Self Loather conceptual trilogy, sole proprietor Nameless (aka Dennis Mikula) explores the most intense and introspective Ghost Bath's oeuvre, advancing with blackened blasts and melancholic movements while moving his only child forward into the unknown. Hoisted into the firmament by the shimmering 'Vodka Butterfly' and the dissonant bliss of 'Well, I Tried Drowning' on one end and lowered into Mikula's personal abyss with 'Dandelion Tea' and the riveting title track on the other, Rose Thorn Necklace is absolute danger and haunting beauty.

Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow, a key transitional album in the Sun Ra catalog, was produced in two sessions shortly after the bandleader's 1961 migration from Chicago to New York (with a brief stopover in Montreal). One of about a dozen Arkestra albums compiled from recordings made at the Choreographer's Workshop, Art Forms displays Sun Ra's increasing tendency to juxtapose stylistic incongruities on vinyl in the interests of showcasing his versatility—or accommodating restless attention spans (perhaps his own).

He played the characteristic mix of styles of dance bands in the 1920s. George Olsen was a drummer and bandleader from Portland, Oregon, who made his name playing in hotels and then in Broadway shows, and despite latterly not being one of the best known names of the era had a string of 49 hits between 1925 and 1945. He played the characteristic mix of styles of dance bands in the 1920s, featuring a blend of hot dance music alongside his more familiar style of middle-of-the-road orchestral music, gradually introducing featured singers after his initial hits, and becoming typical of the "sweet" orchestras of the 1930s who were popular on radio. This 49-track 2-CD collection solely comprises all his career hits, which came out on the Victor, Columbia and Majestic labels. It includes the No. 1 hits "Who", "Always", "A Precious Little Thing Called Love", "Lullaby Of The Leaves" and "The Last Round-Up", plus the Top 3 hits, "Sunny", "Drifting And Dreaming", "Horses", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Skies and "The Best Things In Life Are Free". There were no notable stars among his featured vocalists, but they include Fran Frey, Bob Borger, Bob Rice, Jack Gifford, his wife Ethel Shutta, Paul Small, Dave Marshall, Joe Morrison Judith Blair and Ray Adams. Featuring only his hits, this is a thorough look at one of the consistently popular and successful bandleaders of the '20s and '30s.

For fans of: The Runaways, Rock Goddess. First time that this show has been made officially available on CD in a new, exclusive CD. Filmed at the Camden Palace on December 7th, 1984, this recording captured the London-based Queen’s of heavy metal, Girlschool, while they were midway through recording their 1985 album, ‘Running Wild’. After a run of classic albums for Bronze Records, home of Motorhead and Uriah Heep, Girlschool had been signed to American major label, Mercury Records. Featuring Cris Bonnaci on lead guitar, and vocalist Jackie Bodimead, alongside founder members Kim McAuliffe and Denise Dufort, with bassist Gil Weston, unsurprisingly this set features a total of five songs – ‘Running Wild’, ‘Are You Ready?’, ‘Nowhere To Run’, ‘Love Is A Lie & Can’t You See’ - from the yet to be released ‘Running Wild’, their first album without lead guitarist and lead singer Kelly Johnson. This raucous, hour-long set was originally filmed for TV, while acting as a useful promotional tool for the imminent US release (inexplicably, the album wouldn’t receive an official release outside of the States until 2015, when it was made available on CD for the first time by HNE). Featuring liner notes from Rich Davenport, based on new interviews with Kim McAuliffe.

I think that purists will object to the very Slavonic approach to Brahms in these readings. I do not fall into this category and found them immensely enjoyable. The Borodin Trio and Rivka Golani convince one that they are authoritative players even if their bias is rather too much towards succulent sonorities and an overtly emotional use of tone. They do not fall into the trap of over-projecting the music and without denying their own temperaments are still able to offer a definite style of interpretation.

Fabio Biondi has chosen a selection of delightful virtuoso chamber music pieces by Niccolò Paganini to mark his tenth album for Glossa. Together with his long-term colleague from Europa Galante, the plucked-string specialist Giangiacomo Pinardi (here playing an original romantic guitar from c1825), Biondi delivers one of the most special Glossa albums of recent times. The works, composed between 1804 and c1828, are mainly two-movement sonatas contained in the Centone di sonate collection, although the album also includes the popular Sonata concertata in A major.

Chicago 16 finally gave Chicago a big hit after a four-year drought, thanks in large part to new producer David Foster, who steered the jazz-rock veterans toward a streamlined, crisply produced pop direction on that 1982 effort. Given that success, it's no surprise that the septet teamed with Foster again for its next album, 1984's Chicago 17 (apparently Roman numerals were left behind along with their progressive jazz-rock). It's also no surprise that Foster took an even greater control of 17, steering the group further down the adult contemporary road and pushing Peter Cetera toward the front of the group, while pushing the horns toward the back. Indeed, it's often possible to not notice the horns on 17; they either fade into the background or meld seamlessly with the synthesizers that are the primary instruments here, providing not just the fabric but foundation of nearly all the arrangements…
