On moisturizer, listeners find Wet Leg back at the party, dealing with knotty relationships with an acerbic attitude. But they'll also find a new emotional complexity emerging through the band's cool veneer. Understandable, since the band's singer Rhian Teasdale has opened up about falling in love with their non-binary partner, and in PinkNews mentioned the difficulties of writing about "lusting after a guy … maybe that was something in my subconscious that was just … very gay."

moisturizer's strongest tracks walk a delicate balance between gruff coolness and vulnerability. "jennifer's body" has a slight C86 and early shoegaze feel which never leans too fully into dreamy territory. The band start tightly-wound and soar after building lyrical tension through the protagonist's increasing desire for a character who is "giving Jennifer's Body," a direct reference to the 2009 cult queer/bisexual film of the same name.

"CPR," the album's opener, immediately delivers a gnarlier edge than anything on their self-titled debut. While still retaining the minimalist, stripped back approach of their earlier songs, Wet Leg's lyrics here are more self-interrogating, neurotic and gothic—"Is it love, or suicide?" Teasdale muses.

Teasdale turns to more repulsed feelings on "catch these fists": "I know all too well what you're like/ I don't want your love/ I just want to fight." It's a move that feels almost anti-Pulp in its description of wanting to dance with your friends while a guy tries to make a move on them.

Overall, moisturizer sounds less like a band discovering their uniqueness and more like one finding themselves as people. While this might mean it's lacking in playful vocals, the songwriting is sharper, more hard-hitting, and conveys a refreshingly genuine-sounding angriness to it.
