A Rare 1970 Interview With Jim Morrison. Comparatively little happend to Jim Morrison between 1943, the year he was born and 1964, the year he joined the UCLA to study cinematography. In the 7 years that followed however, Jim Morrison became a legend, living the rock & roll lifestyle to the full and creating some of the most powerful musical images to appear form the progressive rock scene of the 60's.

The UCLA did little for Jim and after producing a shocking exam film which was misunderstood by students and teachers alike he decided to quit and concentrate on his writing with a little drinking and drug taking thrown in for good mewsure. Through friends he met at the UCLA Jim was approached to stand in for a recently departed member of a local band Rick And The Ravens at a one off live show. The leader of the band Ray Manzarek was impressed by Jim. and when they met again in August 1965 Tay suggested that the many poems and lyrics Jim had written over the years may be the perfect foil to a new rock sound that he was developing. During that August night on a Califonian beach the Doors were born.

THe orginal line up consisted of Jim on vocals, Ray on keyboards, Rays brother Rick on guitar and, poached form The Psychedelic Tangers, drummer John Densmore. Ray had not yet introduced the keyboard bass sound that helped make the Doors work so distinctive and the groups fruitless search fo rthe right bass player meant that the earliest recording sessions took place with any bass player that was around and willing. Those first recordings appeared in September of 1965 and consisted of six songs; Moonlight Drive, My Eyes Haven Seen You, End Of The Night, Hello I Love You, Summer's Almost Gone and Go Insane. Though Columbia Records showed an interest in the recordings Rick Manzared was unimpressed and quit. Ricks replacement another Psychedelic Ranger, Robert Krieger joined lin late 1965, and his distinctive guitar sound together with Ray's decision 'to do it myself' with regard the bass playig brought an end to the search fo a 'doors' sound. By late January 1966 the ceremony had truly begun.
