Each song possesses the power to evoke memories and harness the feeling of home through music: from the psychedelic, funk-laden previous single 'Something's Going On' to the congregational energy of today's track 'We Give Thanks', 'Could We Be More' fuses together the African- London synergy which so naturally underpins the heat of Kokoroko's identity.

Fans of the current London scene have known this name for a few years. However, Kokoroko had the good idea to take his time before recording his first album. Many have discovered the collective founded by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey and percussionist Onome Edgeworth with the swaying ballad Abusey Junction which closed We Out Here (a Qobuzissime record!), a famous 2018 compilation zooming in on the bubbling scene of the British capital… Since its birth around 2014, Kokoroko has evolved its roadmap. And if bringing Afrobeat into the 21st century was his initial concern, we quickly arrived at a stylistic pileup made up of jazz, funk, dub, soul, Caribbean music and psychedelia. One foot in the African continent (especially Nigeria and Ghana), the other in this London steeped in cultural diversity, Kokoroko elevates his compositions by backing them against an ultra-solid rhythm section around which a hypnotic groove gravitates. , often boiling brass, rather subtle melodies and, when necessary, beautiful vocal harmonies. Could We Be More is full of this diversity of sounds, percussive textures and instrumental virtuosity. The approach is viscerally collective, the effervescence is constant and the recording was thought of as an album, never as a succession of atmospheres. There is a real formal ambition in this Could We Be More. As there is the desire to reflect an era, a state of the world and what its actors think. In this, Kokoroko is not content to pass on the legacy of the elders – whether they are called Fela Kuti, the Jazz Warriors or Earth Wind & Fire – but rather to write the sequel, to define the future. As Ornette Coleman said: Tomorrow is the question!
