Un des représentants du soul-blues blanc. Adolescent, il accompagne à l'occasion des pointures comme Sonny Boy Williamson ou Lightnin' Hopkins. C'est un harmoniciste de talent, et la légende veut qu'il ait alors donné des leçons à John Lennon pour « Love Me Do ». La carrière solo de McClinton, commencée en 1975 avec l'album Victim Of Life's Circum-stances, se marque par une fusion de funk du Sud et de country-soul. À noter, « Two More Bottles Of Wine », repris par Emmylou Harris, et « B Movie Boxcar Blues », utilisé dans le film homonyme des Blues Brothers.
