Born and raised in Illinois, Corey Stevens was 11 years old when he first picked up a guitar. By 15 he was playing rhythm guitar and writing songs in bands. During college he studied music and eventually earned a degree. Upon graduation, a move to Los Angeles solidified the dreams Stevens had held in his heart since childhood. Paying his dues was like doing hard time, but a job teaching third grade made life a little easier and allowed Stevens to keep a band together and begin his first recording project. Spending ten years teaching was a positive experience that helped build character. Along the way, Corey met and married Linda, a voice and piano teacher. They had one child, a daughter who truly is the apple of her father's eye. An early comparison to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan was a mixed blessing that forced Stevens to push himself in order to make his own statement. In 1995, with the expertise of producer/gunslinger Edward Tree, the first project was released. Blue Drops of Rain, originally released on Eureka Records, brought attention and opportunity to a man who had worked 14 years to get a break. The project also brought Corey to the attention of Discovery Records, which licensed Blue Drops of Rain and funded a second project. 1996 saw chart action that lasted into 1997 and the release of Road to Zen, also produced by Tree. A road warrior who continues to tour alone and with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Corey Stevens has distinguished himself as an artist of integrity and vision, issuing Getaway in early 2000.Jana Pendragon, Allmusic.com

This first project by Corey Stevens is an energetic, witty combination of country, rock and blues. Stevens exhibits a talent for writing the kind of songs that appeal to a wide variety of listeners. Always poignant, Stevens can cover a tune and make it his own, as he does here with the R.G. Ford song "Crosscut Saw." He can also hold his own when tackling a Stevie Ray Vaughan number – his version of "Lenny" is graphic in its approach and delivery. As for his own tunes, "Gone Too Long," "Goin' Crazy" and the title cut all come across with panache. Making a name for himself from live performances and a successful first release, being proclaimed the heir to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stevens shows himself to be a more mature, evolved guitarist, writer and performer. While not as raw as his freshman effort, Blue Drops of Rain, Stevens continues to build a rock-solid career. Road to Zen features more of Stevens' guitar style as well as a tighter production spearheaded by Edward Tree. A passionate performer, this comes through clearly. Corey Stevens pays tribute to Albert King, the blues guitarist that influenced blues power to greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore. It has been said that King only played about six riffs - but they were the ones that counted. Stevens rips it up with the blues power guitar but also adds something that truly defined King - humor. Albertville is a fun romp thru memory lane, but ignores the huge hits like Born Under a Bad Sign and, instead, harvests King's "deep cut" gems. Drummer Steve Ferrone, from Clapton and Petty fame, gives a seminar on how to play blues and R&B.
I have to admit that I never heard any other records of Corey Stevens, this is the first CD I ever bought. I read on the liner notes that (just to use the same words) "this music is dedicated to Albert King". As soon as I started to play the CD I had to check the cover once again… did I put an Albert King CD on by mistake? No, no it was the right one! Corey Stevens (at least on this record) sounds exactly the same as the great Albert: same voice, same guitar tone, same horns as on STAX productions! However, you cannot exactly say that Mr. Stevens is copying the great master. He has a personal style and, from my point of view, he is just paying his passionate tribute to his mentor. Talking about the music I have to say that for me this is a very enjoyable blues album, great selection of songs, excellent playing from all the musicians involved. But most of all I like a lot Mr. Stevens singing and guitar playing that I find very personal in the way he creates solo progressions. He may sound like Albert however Corey Stevens has undoubtedly his own personality and style. Surely I will give a try to his other records soon. 4 1/2 stars!Review by M. Bernocchi, Amazon.com

Corey Stevens has finished his new album entitled The Dreaming Man.
"I've been working at my usual obsessive compulsive rate fearing I would run out of time. And now it looks like I am about finished," Stevens says about the pace of his current project. Stevens added, "I started this project last year in November, but had shows on the road to complicate the process. January was slow getting back into it. I kept thinking about all the momentum I had built up, but just needed to recharge my batteries after a busy year. I eventually got back into the groove in late January and have been in the studio just about every day except for a few road trips which cut into my studio time."
Stevens and his band had shows in December 2009 and in the months of March, May and June of this year, taking away valuable studio time, but helping him pay the bills and keep his singing and guitar playing in shape.
"I think most people picture the recording process as musicians hanging around a studio and playing a lot. The reality is the opposite. There is a lot more time spent trying to get a sound, experimenting with amps and mikes, playing around with reverbs, delays and compressors. It is really easy to go days without touching a guitar especially towards the end. The touring really forced me to stay on top of keeping up my chops," Stevens admitted.
The new CD exceeds 62 minutes debuting 12 new original songs including 2 instrumentals. Stevens wrote the title track for his friend Boon Miller, who was an artist and musician in St. Paul, and co-wrote "Triple Jack" from "Bring On the Blues" with Stevens. Miller died from complications of diabetes.
"I thought The Dreaming Man was a great title, but the more I worked on the album the more I realized it was a GREAT title," Stevens testified. "All the songs seem to have a common thread which was a happy accident. I could never sit down and write a concept album because each song is like a short story to me. This album was different than the others for me. I usually have a lot of material in the song bank and write a few right before I go in the studio. This time I had to actually write most of the album for lack of old material stashed away. It was fun though. I took advantage of some down time on the road. I wrote most of these songs in hotel rooms."
