The new album by Neal Morse & The Resonance - entitled No Hill For A Climber from a resonant line in Barbara Kingsolver's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Demon Copperhead - has its roots at the end of 2023, as Morse explains: "I started thinking about what I was going to do in 2024, and my wife suggested that I should think about doing something with the amazingly talented younger guys that we have here locally - like Chris Riley, Andre Madatian and Philip Martin.

Created in 2021 following the bombshell union of DJ/producer Gilles Peterson and guitarist and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick (who led the brit funk scene at the turn of the 80s with his band Incognito), the STR4TA project aims to resurrect and update the spirit of this delightfully carefree movement - one which can be seen as the precursor to the vast musical melting pot we know today, through which disco, funk, jazz-fusion and synthetic pop were seamlessly linked, creating a sound which was both hedonistic and sophisticated.

Pianist Paik Kun-woo released his first Mozart recording album on Tuesday.

In the early Sixties, the Brazilian import called bossa nova swept through jazz. The music's most prominent composer was Antonio Carlos Jobim, and his score for the 1959 motion picture "Black Orpheus" was packed with songs adopted by jazz musicians. Vince Guaraldi was one of the earliest to grasp the possibilities of bossa nova and recorded four of the Black Orpheus pieces in this 1962 album. He also played two standards and two of his own compositions. One of those originals was a pleasantly rhythmic little melody called "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" which cut like a beam of sunshine through the pop music gloom of the day, beat the odds against quality music and illuminated the upper regions of the national sales charts for nearly half a year.

This 1965 session marked Sonny Rollins's debut recording for the Impulse! label and ranks among his best releases. This collection of standards showcases Rollins's sax playing but his band has also been lauded for an exceptional performance here, notably pianist Ray Bryant.

This early '60s studio session captures Ella Fitzgerald moving toward the smaller, more pointedly jazz-inflected ensembles that would shape her career in her final decades. The intimate setting, superb musicianship and stellar recording make it a favorite among jazz-oriented audiophiles. Not to be missed!

The experimental "Afro-Bossa" features Duke Ellington pushing his talented group to their limits. The jazz master tosses around the forms he knows so well. Other players include Cat Anderson, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, and Cootie Williams. There is plenty of cornet, violin and plunger-muted trumpets.

"Ellington ‘65" is an illuminating eleven-track album of standards from the legendary Duke Ellington. The album is among the very best in his career and highlights some of the most exceptional performances from veteran players like Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope and Lawrence Brown. With blistering horn arrangements, the ensemble delivers passionate and virtuosic performances on songs like “Hello, Dolly!”, “Never on Sunday”, “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. A must have for any music library.

Mr. Tambourine Man is the debut album by the American folk rock band the Byrds. The album, along with the single of the same name, established the band as an internationally successful rock act and was also influential in originating the musical style known as Folk Rock. The term "folk rock" was, in fact, first coined by the U.S. music press to describe the band's sound in mid-1965, at around the same time that the "Mr. Tambourine Man" single reached the top of the Billboard chart. The single and album also represented the first effective American challenge to the dominance of The Beatles and the British Invasion during the mid-1960s.

This series of recordings that Kurt Sanderling did with the Berliner Sinfonia-Orchester date from the late 1970s and are remarkable for their depth of understanding and delivery. This disc, recorded in 1977 and still in completely acceptable sound. Sanderling may not be among the first names mentioned when discussing Sibelius interpreters, but he should be. His Sibelius symphonies cycle with the too-underrated Berlin Symphony is one of the very best.
