Dolly Parton may have spent a good portion of her career being treated as a novelty act, the sweet hillbilly girl with the big smile and the big hair, but it's clear she's had the last laugh. Very few country acts working today have approached Parton's career longevity, and at 70 years old she's still a force to be reckoned with. She doesn't have to play the summer state fair circuit, she hasn't had to re-record her back catalog, she's now acknowledged as a great singer and excellent songwriter, and as much as she likes to pretend she's a dumb blonde, she's a wealthy multi-media magnate who has played the game her own way and won.

The Blue Smoke comes rolling across the Smoky Mountains, the area of Tennessee that Dolly Parton calls home. She named her 42nd studio album after that smoke she also used it for the name of her 2014 tour of Australia and New Zealand, where this 2014 album first appeared (it saw stateside release later in the summer) and while it's not autobiographical, it certainly adds up to a tidy portrait of Parton in 2014. Unlike some of her new millennial albums, Blue Smoke doesn't specialize in one specific sound it is neither a bluegrass nor pop record but rather splits the difference, touching upon each sound, along with threading in other signatures like superstar duets with old friends (Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson both show up, singing songs that appear on their own 2013 albums) and splashy, silly covers of recent pop hits (this time, it's a version of Bon Jovi's "Lay Your Hands on Me").

Shortly, a caravan of stars will join Smokey Robinson on his brand new album, to perform some of the most-loved songs of the past 50 years with their creator. His duet partners range from modern marquee names such as John Legend and Jessie J to heritage hitmakers such as Elton John and James Taylor. The violinist Fanny Robilliard and the pianist Paloma Kouider pursue their chamber music journey with the Trio Karenina by exploring the repertoire for violin and piano of the 20th century. The famous sonatas of Debussy and Ravel come along with two scores by Reynaldo Hahn and Karol Szymanowski.

For years, Dolly Parton wanted to be a big star, and there's no arguing that she had the talent, the smarts, and the drive to be as famous as she wanted. What Dolly didn't have was a handful of records that would get her airplay on pop radio, and she set about changing that with 1977's Here You Come Again, in which she hired a producer who could give her a Top 40 hit. Released in 1979, Great Balls of Fire upped the ante by delivering an aural smorgasbord of pop styles disco ("Star of the Show"), soft rock ("You're the Only One" and "Sweet Summer Lovin'"), ballads ("Do You Think That Time Stands Still" and "Almost in Love"), slinky R&B ("Down" and "It's Not My Affair Anymore"), and even a credible attempt at full-on rock & roll (the title cut).

Ask any long-time Dolly Parton fan what is the one album they have been searching for for years and they have come up empty and they will tell you her 1971 "The Golden Streets of Glory" LP is her hardest and most rare album. The album art of this record is one of Dolly's most beautiful with Dolly adorning the right side and a painting of the Golden Streets on the left. The album is a collection of gospel songs, including "I Believe" and "How Great Thou Art."

In September, Bleachers performed on “MTV Unplugged” at Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Now, Jack Antonoff has announced a new album called MTV Unplugged that features live recordings from the program. It’s out November 10 via RCA. The LP also includes new Bleachers material, as well as alternate versions of tracks from his previous releases 2017’s Gone Now and 2014’s Strange Desire.
