It is hard to believe that at 36 years old Jonny Lang has already had a successful career for two decades. Easier to believe when you learn he released his first platinum record at 15—an age when many young people are just beginning to play music.

West Africa’s most iconic dance-band are back. A decade on from their last album and almost half a century since their formation, Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab return with a timeless set of classic, swaying tunes fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms and African tradition in the group’s trademark style.

The six composers featured on pianist Gloria Cheng's album entitled Montage are among today's most sought-after creators of film music - composers that have amply demonstrated their skill at creating mood and propelling action. However, when working away from the movie screen, what melodies, harmonies, and cadences might haunt their private dreams? Cheng offers an answer to those questions with compelling first recordings of their works for solo piano, a medium that can often reveal a composer's truest voice.

Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera existed, this Rappresentatione premiered in February 1600 is a magisterial musical drama. In its dialogue between Soul and Body – an emblematic theme of the Counter-Reformation – it employs singers, chorus, and an extensive orchestra whose varied timbres both accompany and characterise the soloists. At the dawn of the Baroque revolution, song, stage action, dance, and instrumental music combine in perfect harmony.

After a relationship lasting some ten years, the last few of which were stormy, Frédéric Chopin finally separated from George Sand in July 1847. It was on her estate at Nohant that, over seven summers, he had composed or completed the core of his oeuvre: the Fantaisie Op.49, a dozen mazurkas, the Berceuse, several nocturnes, two of the ballades, two of the scherzos, his last two sonatas, the Trois Nouvelles Études, three impromptus, three waltzes, two polonaises, among others.

For her first solo recital disc on harmonia mundi, Sunhae Im has chosen four cantatas dealing with the myth of Orpheus. The figure of the mythical singer, whose songs moved even wild beasts and inanimate rocks to tears, has fascinated composers ever since touching the listener s emotions became the programme of the musical work of art and offering a wide range of possibilities for musical depiction: the melodious charm of Arcadia; the dances during the wedding celebrations of Orpheus and Eurydice; the abrupt change of mood at Eurydice s death; Orpheus daring descent into Hades; and finally the subjugation of the underworld deities and even death itself through expressive solo singing.

For its latest recording on Harmonia Mundi, Stile Antico is joined by the outstanding viol consort Fretwork to explore the wealth of sacred music written not for church performance, but for the court and for the home. Sung entirely in English, this fascinating programme spans two centuries and a vast range of styles, from the austerity of Browne and Taverner to the harmonic daring of Tomkins and Ramsey, and from the smallest works by Campion and Dowland to the great verse anthems of Gibbons and Amner.

Andrea Marcon and La Cetra Barockorchester & Vokalensemble Basel sparkle in this new release of Handel's forgotten masterpiece Parnasso in testa, recorded shortly before their hugely successful Netherlands premiere of the opera in November 2016.

Beaucoup d'eau a coulé sous le pont de Recouvrance depuis l'album précédent de Miossec, Chansons Ordinaires, paru en 2011. L'ataxie, une maladie orpheline qui l'a contrait à marcher avec une canne, l'a également tenu à distance de l'alcool. L'auteur de Boire a dû se faire une raison et reprendre le chemin du studio d'enregistrement. En l'occurrence, c'est avec Albin de la Simone que le Brestois a souhaité travailler pour la première fois, ainsi qu'avec l'ingénieur du son Jean-Baptiste Brunhes, à la maison. Amateur du contre-pied artistique, Miossec retourne à la chanson de proximité la plus intime et touchante, à la façon de « On vient à peine de commencer », quand l'album précédent trompait son intitulé par un dosage élevé de rock. Cette ode à la seconde chance ne dépare pas de ses dix consoeurs chantant principalement l'amour, côté souffrance (« Le Coeur »), côté coup de foudre (« Samedi soir au Vauban », entre guitare et bandonéon) ou côté doutes (« Qui nous aime »).

Tout destinait Juliette Gréco à enregistrer un jour un disque de chansons de Jacques Brel. Mais Gréco connaissait et aimait trop la musique de Brel pour que l'enregistrer fut une simple formalité ou une évidence. Au contraire, elle en a fait à la fois une ouvre de fidélité, par amitié pour l'auteur qu'elle a connu, mais aussi une véritable interprétation. On retrouve dans cet album les incontournables que Gréco interprète sur scène : "J'arrive", "Ne Me Quitte Pas". renouvelées par les arrangements de Bruno Fontaine - il suffit d'écouter la déchirante "Chanson des Vieux Amants" qui clôt l'album, accompagnée du seul violoncelle de Sonia Wieder Atherton.

Etonnant Lavilliers ! Brillant voyageur, qui change encore une fois la donne. Dans ce 21ème album studio, il envoie valser d un coup de rein les rythmes chaloupés, au profit de guitares électriques, cordes, cuivres et percussions orchestrées en bouquets énergisants. Pour cet album, Bernard Lavilliers retrouve aux arrangements et à la réalisation Fred Pallem, présent dans l univers du chanteur depuis Causes perdues et musiques tropicales, Florent Marchet rencontré lors de la création du spectacle Frère animal, ou Romain Humeau, chanteur d Eiffel, artisan de l album Acoustique et d une partie de Baron Samedi.

A l'origine du carton de l'album concept "Corsu Mezu Mezu", écoulé à plus de 300.000 ventes, Patrick Fiori revient au premier plan pour présenter le successeur de "Choisir" (2014). Le chanteur, qui fait les beaux jours de TF1 dans la quatrième saison de "The Voice Kids", publiera son 10ème album studio le 29 septembre prochain. « Je me suis promis d’enlever toutes les barrières, musicalement, et de me faire confiance un petit peu plus. Voire totalement » confie l'artiste, soucieux à 47 ans de « garder sa place dans la chanson française » avec ce projet baptisé "Promesse".

Deux événements significatifs ont précédé la sortie de Liberté Chérie, septième album de Calogero. Tout d'abord la sortie, quelques semaines avant, du premier extrait « Je joue de la musique », tube imparable muni d'une mélodie comme le chanteur n'en avait pas connu depuis longtemps et signe d'un retour inspiré après l'accueil mitigé réservé au prédécesseur (Les Feux d'Artifice, 2014).

Johann Sebastian Bach’s appearance on 7th May 1747 at the court of Frederick the Great is the best documented event in the composer’s otherwise unglamorous career. During the proceedings, Frederick provided Bach with an exceptionally difficult theme on which to improvise a fugue. The King is said to have been impressed with the improvisation, but Bach himself was less so, and announced that he intended to set the theme to paper ‘in a regular fugue’.
